Gaming for Education: Video Games Have Educational Value
Video games have a reputation for rotting young minds with their emphasis on weapons, violence, conflict and death. But some teachers and game designers say these games can have real educational value. Video game designer Liz Fiacco says, “Well done games are literature. They’re amazing and it’s just a different kind of a way to experience something.” This new kind or literature can simulate whole new environments that students should be learning from, according to Bernie Dodge, professor of learning design and technology at San Diego State University. “If we really want to prepare kids for this century then I think there is a different kind of game required, its more like a simulated experience, more like moving through an environment that you can't actually get to right here and now.”

Why Video Games are Good for Students
Looking at whether there’s a correlation between playing video games and learning will continue to gain popularity among teachers and students who are looking for an effective method to increase skills and test scores. The skeptics believe that there is no correlation between video games and improving test scores. But others increasingly see video games as a useful learning tool. A study published in the journal Educational Psychology was based on a survey of over 27,000 French teenagers. It measured the frequency (ranging from “never” to “every day or almost”) that teenagers played recreational video games (car racing, fighting, etc.) vs. how often they took part in reading activities (including crime, thriller, and fantasy). It then used the results to determine that there were "no correlations or very slight ones between video games and cognitive/school tests.” However, when you consider the video games in the study were being played for recreation purposes and were not learning-based games, it’s difficult to determine how much weight someone should place on these results. It’s fair to say that reading activities have important associations with cognitive abilities, but the cognitive stimulation produced from games played for fun is entirely different from those involved in academic subjects. What’s more, this study opposes a theory that hasn’t even been proposed: that all video games improve grades. The research fails to look at video games designed for the purpose of learning and supplementing classroom learning. In contrast, a study in the Journal of the Learning Sciences shows that games aligned to a curriculum can improve grades as well as long-term retention. At the end of the testing period, 92% percent of teachers said they would continue to use video games as part of their program because of these advantages: Students playing the games increased their test scores by the equivalent of half a letter grade in three weeks. Teachers who blended their classrooms, dividing time between typical instruction and game-based learning, reported dramatic increases in student engagement. Ninety-two percent of teachers said they would like to use similar games again because of the impact on student performance and engagement. Unlike the study found in the journal Educational Psychology, the study published in the Journal of the Learning Sciences acknowledges the critical difference between playing for leisure and playing a game with the intent to learn. Was inspired by the 'MAKE IT BETTER' video by Clim. (I've also sampled a few sounds from the video) vimeo.com/18678091 Video was made in After Effects CS5. I also used Photoshop & Illustrator. Came up with the idea on Friday 18th February, 2011 Did the storyboard the same day. Edited the video on Saturday 19th - Tuesday 22nd February. Added the music and sound effects on Wednesday 23rd February. This was my 2nd time using After Effects. My website: http://www.deanlord.co.uk

Machine Learning in Video Games
Machine learning is an amazing technique of studying algorithms and creating custom automated responses. In video games this can drastically improve your gaming experience; from improving AI (Artificial Intelligence) and creating realistic competitive NPCs to fill lobbies, to simply improving a games reaction to a particular players playing style. Today I explain a brief overview of what machine learning is and how it is affecting your gaming experience today. === Caption === So starting off with machine learning, lets first debunk a common misconception. A lot of the time non-programmers talk about machine learning they make it seem like this mystical thing that is very strange, unorganized, chaotic and illogical, but it’s anything apart from that. It’s a very structured scientific and mathematical process. Essentially machine learning is the process of studying algorithms and discovering matching patterns within large data sets. Just a reminder incase you aren’t familiar with the term “algorithm”, but it’s simple a step-by-step procedure with a set of rules and operations that given some input will generate an output. So since machine learning is the process of studying algorithms; this means that instead of a programmer explicitly writing code for a particular procedure, they write a program that would take all of this input, find patterns, and then determine what would be the proper response. So now that we know that, let’s talk about how it’s involved with games. A few quick popular examples are Forza Motorsport 5, and Titan Fall. In Forza everyone has a “racing profile” that is a ghost racer, or computer version of you that other people can race against; and also when you race you can compete with other peoples profiles and not them themselves. So basically what this means is that a computer observes how a particular person races. It does this by tracking given a particular situation like a turn, or your surrounded by a bunch of cars and sees how do you react, do you make tight turns, pass people, race aggressively or passively? Then once the computer recognizes and learns a bunch of patterns in your driving responses, when other people race against your profile the program can say given that situation what would you probably do, then it’s as-if that person is playing a near replica of you. Now onto the specific technologies that Forza is using to complete this. All of your controller inputs, and driving reactions in your game is sent from your console over a service like xbox live to a server that runs something called Drivatar, which is a Machine Learning program Microsoft Research has built. Then Drivitar, figures out given which profiles you are racing against what their response would be, then sends that back to your console for it to be processed and rendered on your screen. Now not only is the speed of this amazingly fast but lets talk about what this means for gaming. So if you have a computer observing all of these different racers and generating their profiles; and you have people racing against profiles. Why can't you have fake profiles racing against fake profiles to determine which is better? Which means you have replicas of people and you can figure out which one is the best. Then you can determine which profile is the best overall. So now instead of someone specifically programing an AI you can just pick a profile. This way you can create an AI that is at least as good as the best human player that ever played the game. This way you can generate a lot of different difficulties and racing styles. This also translates to a bunch of other types of games like Titanfall. Imagine you are fighting against a computer enemy and they can learn how you respond to things. So they can make the game easy, hard, or uniquely respond to compliment your gaming style for the best gaming experience for you. === Resources === Drivatar: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/drivatar/

Using Games in the Classroom
Every game has potential for learning! Consider the educational value in some of the more popular, entertainment-focused games that your students (and you!) already enjoy at home. Of course, not all games are school-appropriate, but you can approach any game from an educational perspective. Think of games as experiences rather than instruction -- as field trips, not textbooks. It's a perspective that's as valuable for students as it is for teachers. Keynote - Ten Important Findings From The Research On Games For Impact
It has been over a decade since Jim Gee's seminal text "What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy" was published and the proposition that video games are great learning environments was advanced. Since that time, slowly but surely, games have advanced along the Gartner Hype Cycle from peak of inflated expectations to the slope of enlightenment (Squire, 2016). We now have a decade of research under our belts on what works (and why) in games for learning. We better understand how games specifically can generate learning and behavior change both inside classrooms and out. And we have begun to see third generation products enter the market that blur the distinction between games for impact and games for commercial ends. In this presentation, Steinkuehler highlights ten big findings from the scholarly literature confirm, explain, and sometimes surprise about the nature of games and changing minds. She then draws some observations about the remaining frictions and opportunities in the games for change ecosystem and offers a few admonitions as we shift into the next phase or R&D. Speakers: * Constance Steinkhuehler (Professor, University of California, Irvine)
