Subscribe:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMXXBuIQvUD45EtfWqzU0FQ?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Gamedenker/ Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/Gamedenker About the video: Can video games be categorised as art? On one side we have modern artists who won't mind categorising anything as art such as a shark preserved in formaldehyde or cubes filled with New York city's Garbage. On the other hand, we have the late Roger Ebert, the famous film critic who argued that video games can never be art because they are simply games, and the difference between art and games is that you can win a game. It has rules, points, objectives, and a clear outcome. Are video games games or art? What is art and what is a game? Why Video games are Art | The Beauty of Play, and How 'Fun' is not the Opposite of Art
Are video games art? An in depth analysis explaining why videogames are art, and why it is important we spread the message. The fact that video games are art seems self-evident to many, but games are still dismissed as lacking in artistic merit , due mostly to their emphasis on play and fun, but in this video, I try to get underneath why that view is misguided. This video tries to definitively answer why videogames are art. Historically, art has always been a performance of some kind, and games fall firmly into that category. Games are about meaning, emotion, purpose, storytelling, abstract systems and imitation. These attributes cover many of the definitions of art conceived of by art theorists through the ages. Why games are art ? Are Videogames Art? Games are art in more ways than one. You still have many who say videogames are not art, and they are right. Many games are not art just like there are books and movies that are not art. Just because some games are not art, does not mean all games are not art, or that some games can't be. This video tries to definitively answer why videogames are art. The art of play involves expression creativity and flair, and we live out stories through our actions. An artform has rules and historical lineage, just like games. Games are art because we engage with and discuss them in meaningful ways, and they effect people deeply. If you like this content, please subscribe! The Game Overanalyser Roger Ebert games The film critic Roger Ebert once said that games can never be art, because they fundamentally detract from the authorship of creators, have win conditions and, are about fun. But to say videogames are not art is to make a premature judgement in my estimation. Why are games art? Becuase they fulfill all the criteria for art in accordance with any number of different definitions, and so to relegate it to not being art is to say that art doesn't exist at all. There are art games that deliberately want to take fun away from the player, as well as games that have been preserved in museums. I go into this in the video. Why games are art Are games art Games are art Video games are art art games the art of games are games art journey art why Videogames are art Videogames are an artform. Games are an artform. Kellee Santiago: Are Video Games Art?
Game innovator Kellee Santiago insists that games are more than entertainment. They are art. As a student in the MFA Interactive Media program at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, Kellee's research focused on game design, interactive narrative, and physical and gestural interfaces for digital media. She has produced and managed a number of interactive projects including "I'm Gonna Kill the President! A Federal Offense" at PS122, and "The Angel Project" at Lincoln Center. While at USC, she teamed up with fellow student Jenova Chen to develop the student-created game, "Cloud." The critically acclaimed game led them to found their own studio, thatgamecompany, which landed a three game deal with Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. to develop downloadable games for Playstation Network. thatgamecompany's mission is to create games that push the possibilities of what games can communicate.

My brief argument for videogames to be recognized as a serious art form, however primitive at the moment. Clips shown: Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat A Trip to the Moon Dickson Experimental Sound Film The Persistence of Memory Karajan conducting Beethoven's 5th Symphony Citizen Kane The Battleship Potemkin Un Chien Andalou Singin' in the Rain The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Metropolis Iron Man 300 Satantango SpaceWar! Pong Pac-Man Super Mario Bros. Madden Football 1995 The Incredible Machine Final Fantasy X Command and Conquer 3 Metal Gear Solid 4 Roger Ebert Johann Sebastian Bach Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Michael Levy's Giant Steps Christian Wolff John Zorn John Zorn's Cobra Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time The Neverhood LocoRoco Patapon Resident Evil 5 Fallout 3 Grand Theft Auto 4 New Super Mario Bros. Crysis Grau Cops Shadow of the Colossus Façade The Night Journey Super Smash Bros. Brawl Duke Nukem Forever The Path Okami Transcript: When the motion picture was invented, critics considered it an amusing toy. They didn't see its potential to be an art form like painting or music. But only a few decades later, film was in some ways the ultimate art, capable of passion, lyricism, symbolism, subtlety and beauty. Film could combine the elements of all other arts - music, literature, poetry, dance, staging, fashion, and even architecture - into a single, awesome work. Of course, film will always be used for silly amusements, but it can also express the highest of art. Film has come of age. In the 1960s, computer programmers invented another amusing toy: the videogame. Nobody thought it could be a serious art form. And who could blame them? Super Mario Bros. didn't have much in common with Citizen Kane. And, nobody was even trying to make artistic games. Companies just wanted to make fun playthings that would sell lots of copies. But recently, games have started to look a lot like the movies, and people wondered, "Could this become a serious art form, like film?" In fact, some games basically were films, with tiny bits of gameplay snuck in. Of course, there is one major difference between films and games. Film critic Roger Ebert thinks games can never be an art form, because: "Video games by their nature require player choices, which is the opposite of the strategy of serious film and literature, which requires authorial control." But wait a minute... aren't there already serious art forms that allow for flexibility, improvisation, and player choices? Bach, Mozart, and other composers famously left room for improvisation in their classical compositions. And of course jazz music is an art form based almost entirely on improvisation within a set of scales or modes or ideas. Avantgarde composers Christian Wolff and John Zorn write "game pieces" in which there are no pre-arranged notes at all! Performers play according to an unfolding set of rules, exactly as in baseball or... Mario. So gameplay can be art. Maybe the real reason some people don't think games are an art form is that they don't know of any artistic videogames. Even the games with impressive graphic design and good music have hokey stories and unoriginal drive-jump-shoot gameplay. And for the most part, they're right. There aren't many artistic games. Games are only just becoming an art form. It took film a while to become art, too. But maybe the skeptics haven't played the right games, either. Have they played Shadow of the Colossus, a minimalist epic of beauty and philosophy? Have they played Façade, a one-act play in which the player tries to keep a couple together by listening to their dialogue, reading their facial expressions, and responding in natural language? Have they seen The Night Journey, by respected video artist Bill Viola, which intends to symbolize a mystic's path to enlightenment? It is an exciting time for videogames. They will continue to deliver simple fun and blockbuster entertainment, but there is also an avant-garde movement of serious artists who are about the launch the medium to new heights of expression. And I, for one, can't wait to see what they come up with.

Classic Game Room - THE ART OF VIDEO GAMES book review
The Art of Video Games book review. Classic Game Room reviews THE ART OF VIDEO GAMES: FROM PAC-MAN TO MASS EFFECT from Chris Melissinos and Patrick O'Rourke published by Welcome Books in 2012. Roger Ebert says video games can never be art, this book shows quite the opposite and cites examples and captures developer interviews to prove its point. As video games are embraced as a new emerging art form the Smithsonian American Art Museum holds an exhibit called The Art of Video Games exhibit. This book is written by Smithsonian curator Chris Melisinos and features examples of art in video games from the past 40 years. Marvel at the art and creative work that went into games like Combat, Space Invaders and Pitfall on the Atari 2600. Chris then compares the early examples to '80s 8-bit classics such as The Legend of Zelda and 16-bit masterpieces like Phantasy Star IV. Modern releases like Bioshock, Minecraft and Mass Effect 2 complete the picture as developers earn bigger budgets and more advanced tools to complete their visions... but does it make better art? This hard cover book is a great addition to any gaming collection and makes a nice coffee table showpieces as well. Printed on glossy, high quality paper with great pictures and interviews you'll dig The Art of Video Games the most.

Kingdom Hearts | Video Games are Art
I believe video games hold the same value as movies or books when it comes to storytelling. These art mediums have potential for good or bad stories, and video games are no exception. In this video, I talk about how Kingdom Hearts showed me the value of video games as an art form, and an avenue for storytelling. Other game series that have proven video games to carry literary value: 1. Final Fantasy 2. The Legend of Zelda 3. Halo 4. Telltale’s The Walking Dead 5. Super Mario Bros. 6. Batman Arkham series 7. Assassin’s Creed If you’d like, list more in the comments! DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the footage used for review purposes. Kingdom Hearts belongs to Disney and Square Enix.
