Steam Engine History

09:17
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler.

The Steam Engine ~ James Watt

14:30
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the water. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine was the first commercial true steam engine using a piston, and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine. James Watt,(30 January 1736 (19 January 1736 OS) – 25 August 1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.

James Watt (Steam Engine) - Greatest Inventors of All Time

00:55
James Watt may have been the single most responsible person in bringing about the Industrial Revolution. He made the steam engine dramatically more efficient by introducing a separate condenser that avoided wasting energy, which radically improved the machine’s power output and transformed it into the workhorse of factory production. In 1781, after much financial hardship and struggle, Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. In a flash, new classes of industry were economically viable, setting off a rapid period of immense economic and social change across world. Watt also developed the concept of horsepower, and invented the document copier, patenting the device in 1780. The principle on which the machine is based remained in use until the arrival of modern photocopiers and the watt unit of power is named after him.

History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV

History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine,[1] first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines. A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks.[2] In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars. Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. However, push-pull operation has become common, where the train may have a locomotive (or locomotives) at the front, at the rear, or at each end. Prior to locomotives, the motive force for railroads had been generated by various lower-technology methods such as human power, horse power, gravity or stationary engines that drove cable systems. The first successful locomotives were built by Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick. In 1804 his unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Although the locomotive hauled a train of 10 long tons (11.2 short tons; 10.2 t) of iron and 70 passengers in five wagons over nine miles (14 km), it was too heavy for the cast iron rails used at the time. Steam Power Documentary 2017 HD - History of Steam Engines

38:14
This HD Documentary looks at Steam and Steam Power. It's full steam ahead when we drop in at Jay Leno's garage as Jay fires up two of his classic steam cars and takes viewers for a couple of rides. Jay also shows off his 11-ton steam engine built in 1860, back when pigs had to be slaughtered to keep it lubricated. In northern Nevada, fire up a coal burning boiler and get a 100-year-old steam locomotive chugging across the rugged landscape. In New Orleans, board an authentic paddlewheel steamboat. Trek to the Southern California desert where geothermal steam rushes up from the ground and drives electricity producing turbines, powering over 300,000 homes. In New York City, find out why manmade steam surges into some of the world's most famous skyscrapers. Steam clean some very dirty machines, and do a little laundry, too. And ride a steam-driven carousel and play with some strange, steam-powered robots that are part of a movement called--what else--"steampunk."

A description of history's first steam-powered device. Described and possibly invented by the Greek inventor Hero of Alexandria in the 1st century AD. A very similar and quite possibly the same device was described by the Roman architect Vitruvius in the 1st century BC as an existing invention. The basic technology of this device draws heavily on the earlier work by the Greek 3rd century BC inventor Ctesibius and was possibly already invented by him, but it's impossible to determine since none of Ctesibius' works survive today...

Working Model of Stephenson's STEAM ENGINE made of GLASS ! Rare!

02:17
Highlights: * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass. * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut! * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston. * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack. This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engine was made in 2008 by master glassblower Michal Zahradník. This is the revised version of my history video on locomotive 3801, a true icon of Australian innovation and engineering. I removed it from YouTube while it was just short of 1.4K views. These are the changes I have made compared to the original: - Changed soundtrack to the "3801" song performed by Ray King & Ron Russel and featured in the "3801 a legend in steam documentary: - Tweaked/changed some info - Removed excessive footage of other train models/types - Added graphic I made of 3801 at end of video 3801 was completed in late 1942 by Clyde Engineering and entered service on 22 January 1943. The engine has many accomplishments under its name, including being the first streamlined locomotive in NSW, the first steam locomotive to cross Australia, the only to visit all main line states and territories and more.

Triple-Expansion Marine Steam Engine (1910) In Slow Motion

03:25
This engine is of the three-stage expansion condensing type, and was fitted in the 25 ft. launch 'Marie', designed and built by Messrs. Simpson, Strickland and Co. , Dartmouth. The type of engine shown is especially designed for use in yachts and similar vessels and has large bearing surfaces to enable the engine to be run at high speeds for long periods without repair. The cylinders are arranged so that the high-pressure cylinder is in the centre. Their diametres are 2.5 in. (64 mm), 4 in. (102 mm) and 6 in. (152 mm). The stroke is 3 in. (76 mm). Light and open framework, as is usual in small, quick-running engines, is employed and consists of steel columns in front and a cast-iron frame at the back, bolted to a cast-iron bed-plate. The guides are bolted to the back standards. Link motion of the Stephenson type is employed. The air pump and boiler feed pump are driven direct from the I.P. crosshead by rocking levers and are fitted with metal and vulcanized fibre valves. An 8 in. (203 mm) pulley on the end of the crankshaft, which, in the Museum, is utilised to drive the engine, is provided for driving a boiler fan. It is stated, that this type of marine engine has been found by experiment to use about 25 % less steam than the the two-cylinder compound type and therefore requires a smaller boiler and bunker capacity. The boiler used is of the water-tube type with a working pressure of 250 psi (17.2 bar) and the engine is capable of developing 18 indicated hp. It's interesting to compare the valve times of the cylinders. And it's a real pleasure, to see, how the parts of this engine, e.g. the valve gear, are designed and manufactured with finest craftmanship.

How Do Steam Locomotives Work - Steam Engines Explained

03:36
This was probably one of the hardest things to animate, especially the rods and cranks. With more time I would've been able to fully and properly animate them - but, alas. Time was my enemy. The video explains how steam locomotives use a fuel (usually coal) to start a fire and get water boiling, in order to create steam, which drives the reciprocating piston. Much like a piston in your car, although there there's one tiny "explosion" that happens when the piston is on the top of the stroke (along with a few other pistons). In reciprocating steam engines, pistons get pushed and pushed, meaning: They get pushed by pressurised steam from both sides, alternating (obviously). Using this back-and-forth motion, using a smart connection to the drive wheel - offsetting it from the center - you can get that wheel to move. And thus, move the train (and whatever it's pulling). There are different types of steam engine, the most popular one (and the one used in most steam locomotives) is the reciprocating piston engine. A piston moves left and right, pushed by (super)heated steam. This directly drives the wheels. A few things were skipped in the animation, such as the steam whistle or how the safety valve works. I also left out the superheater, because of time constraints. Basically, what a superheater does, is run the steam entering the main steam pipe and rerouting it passed the firetubes, thus further heating the steam. This to make absolutely sure the water in the steam is too hot to condens in the pistons. Of course there is more to the story of locomotives and trains than just how they work, the whole idea of moving cargo by train is interesting. As is the rules of the road - or rail, rather - that apply. 🌏🌍🌎 Care to add your own language in subtitles? http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?v=nd2Ii4OGQ4k&ref=share Awesome: ▶▶ Become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyD3sEJLC52UzR1wjtclsPw/?sub_confirmation=1 Get in touch: ▶ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Reddit: http://www.facebook.com/u/sebasvandenbrink ▶ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Web: https://sebvandenbrink.com/ Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive_components https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebox_(steam_engine)
