Do Violent Video Games Cause Real-Life Violence? (Spoiler Alert: No.)

55:26
How many times will video games, specifically violent video games, be used as a scapegoat for violence in the real world? Every time there's a school shooting or another tragedy, it seems like the discussion inevitably comes back to video games. Well, there's already a rating system, so what are we talking about here? An outright ban? How about finding evidence that actually connects playing violent video games to committing violent acts? According to the sources used, only 20% of school shooters even play video games. In other words, 80% of them DON'T play video games. And of the ones that do, they seem to prefer non-violent games (such as Dance Dance Revolution). Most U.S. courts, when going over the evidence for judicial review, have determined that no causal link can be established. You might even say that judges have found video games "not guilty." I Love Violent Video Games...

The trump administration is going after violent video games. On March 8th, they met with the ESA and showed them a reel of graphic violence in a variety of Triple-A titles. As a person who has played violent video games since childhood, I find the Trump Administration's current crusade against video games quite laughable. Episode 4: Violent Video Games’ Effects On Children

32:49
In Episode 4 of Meet The Professors, Craig Anderson (Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for the Study of Violence, Iowa State University), Brad Bushman (Professor of Communication and Psychology, The Ohio State University), and Deana Pollard Sacks (Roberson King Professor of Law, Texas Southern University) discuss the dozens of studies showing that children and adolescents who spend a significant amount of time playing violent video games become more aggressive in their thoughts and actions. The relatively new brain scan studies show that brain chemistry is altered when video games are played for long period of time, and permanent brain re-wiring can result, with attendant negative effects such as conduct disorder, aggression, “mean world syndrome,” and depression.

"The results are in from the world’s first long-term study into the consumption of violent media and its effect on real-life acts of violence. (If you’re a member of the Australian Christian Lobby, you may want to sit down for a minute.) Not only did the study find zero link between the consumption of violent games and real-life violent acts, but violent games could actually be responsible for a decrease in youth violence. The new study was conducted by clinical psychologist Christopher Ferguson from Stetson University in the US. Ferguson analysed the rates of youth violence from 1996 to 2011 and compared it to the consumption of violent video games over the same time period (based on the appraisal of ESRB ratings experts).” * Ben Mankiewicz (http://www.twitter.com/BenMank77; What The Flick?! & Turner Classic Movies) and Ana Kasparian (http://www.twitter.com/AnaKasparian) discuss. *Read more here from http://www.kotaku.com.au/2014/11/new-study-finds-violent-games-might-actually-curb-real-world-violence/ ********** Ebola Doc, Marijuana Study, Video Game Study & Lesbians - The Young Turks 11/11/2014 Social Commentary http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTpcK80irdQjs_i-JayfFxxZQhIrNekAA ********** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Video games get a lot of flack for being "too violent," but like it or not, some of the most important and memorable titles in video game history are filled with blood, guts, and machine gun fire. Some games are violent just for shock value, but some are really hellbent on unhinging you. Video games have been shocking people with their violence since the 1970s, back when games were still confined to nickel arcades. Violent racing games, violent shooters, and violent punch-out games like Mortal Kombat have been proliferating ever since. Violent Video Games and Their Effects on Adolescents

02:34
Fact check me! If you have a hard time believing any of the information presented in this video I have provided all the resources that I used below. Hope you enjoyed the video! Aamodt, S. & Wang, S. (2008). Welcome to Your Brain: Why You Lose Your Car Keys But Never Forget How to Drive and Other Puzzles of Everyday Life. New York: Bloomsbury USA. I used this source to explain a study about video game players who play action video games tend to process information more quickly, can track more objects at once and have better task switching abilities than non-video game players. This helps strengthen my claim that certain video games can be beneficial and that not all video games are bad for children. Anderson, Craig A. “An update on the effects of playing violent video games.” Journal of Adolescence, vol. 27, no. 1, 2004, pp. 113–122., doi:10.1016/j.adolescence.2003.10.009. This study showed that exposure to violent video games is significantly linked to increases in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognition, aggressive affect, and cardiovascular arousal, and to decreases in helping behavior. This helps show that violent video games have some negative effects to them. Gentile, Douglas A. Media violence and children: a complete guide for parents and professionals. Westport, CT, Praeger, 2003. Gentile (2003) discusses the metaphorical aggressive behavior thermometer. This source allowed me to show the different levels of aggression and how violent media can heighten it.  According to Gentile, media violence generally moves individuals about 3 ‘degrees’ on the metaphorical aggressive behavior thermometer. The picture of the thermometer is shown in the video. Sherry, John L. "The effects of violent video games on aggression." Human communication research 27.3 (2001): 409-431. Sherry (2001) indicates that the type of violent video game you purchase for your child could actually predict the level of aggression they exhibit. Video games with human or fantasy violence have been shown to have greater effects on aggression on children than video games containing sports violence. This source was used as additional information as to why adolescents should stay away from violent media and videogames.

They said that they believe the killing of 20 children and 6 adults may have amounted to some kind of score in Lanza's mind. This is not the first time that violent video games have taken heat after a killing. Violent Video Games, Animation, and Psychology!

Violence in media, especially video games, has been the center of some controversy. Can the violence one sees on a screen lead to violent acts in real life? Well Ben made this wonderful video about a gamer named Pete for his psychology class to explain the psychological support for both sides of the controversy. And Ben might of thrown his own opinion in there somewhere. Works Cited: Blair, Tannock. "Why Media Violence Is Not as Much of a Problem as "experts" Would Have You Believe The Cabbage Chronicle." Steven Pinker: The Impact of Violent Video Games on Kids

01:33
Steven Pinker (@sapinker), Cognitive Scientist and Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, talks with Aroop Mukharji (@aroopmukharji) about violence and video games, war, and why academic writing is so bad. Listen to the full interview: https://soundcloud.com/belfercenter/sets/office-hours More about Steven Pinker: http://stevenpinker.com Belfer Center website: http://www.belfercenter.org Mukharji: What is the research on kids and violent video games? Are those desensitizing kids to violence? Pinker: Nah. Mukharji: Or are they, is it sublimation—the idea that you can, you channel those basic urges into safe and socially acceptable channels? Pinker: I think it's, it's neither. That, um… If consuming violent media made you violent, then we should prevent adults from reading The Iliad, or for that matter the Old Testament. Together with Shakespearean tragedies and Godfather movies and much else. Mukharji: Surely reading Shakespeare is different than like shooting people on a screen, right? Pinker: Not necessarily because in Shakespeare you have a lot of violence that is presented as justified, and that gives you satisfaction. The data show that video games have skyrocketed in popularity during exactly the historical period in which violent crime has sunk to the floor. And in the same age cohorts. I don't think it's because that we have some hydraulic urge to violence that has to be channeled through one conduit less than burst out into another, but it is, so it partly these are independent about developments. Partly the beneficial effect of video games may just be that if you’re playing video games you're not getting into trouble in other ways. And so the young men who are behind the screen are not out picking fights in bars or over parking spots.
