FILM DESCRIPTION: Director John Landis put himself on the map with this low-budget, fabulously successful comedy, which made a then-astounding 62 million dollars and started a slew of careers for its cast in the process. National Lampoon's Animal House is set in 1962 on the campus of Faber College in Faber, PA. The first glimpse we get of the campus is the statue of its founder Emil Faber, on the base of which is inscribed the motto, "Knowledge Is Good." Incoming freshmen Larry "Pinto" Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (Stephen Furst) find themselves rejected by the pretentious Omega fraternity, and instead pledge to Delta House. The Deltas are a motley fraternity of rejects and maladjusted undergraduates (some approaching their late twenties) whose main goal -- seemingly accomplished in part by their mere presence on campus -- is disrupting the staid, peaceful, rigidly orthodox, and totally hypocritical social order of the school, as represented by the Omegas and the college's dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon). Dean Wormer decides that this is the year he's going to get the Deltas expelled and their chapter decertified; he places the fraternity on "double secret probation" and, with help from Omega president Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) and hard-nosed member Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), starts looking for any pretext on which to bring the members of the Delta fraternity up on charges. The Deltas, oblivious to the danger they're in, are having a great time, steeped in irreverence, mild debauchery, and occasional drunkenness, led by seniors Otter (Tim Matheson), Hoover (James Widdoes), D-Day (Bruce McGill), Boon (Peter Riegert), and pledge master John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi). They're given enough rope to hang themselves, but even then manage to get into comical misadventures on a road trip (where they arrange an assignation with a group of young ladies from Emily Dickinson University). Finally, they are thrown out of school, and, as a result, stripped of their student deferments (and, thus, eligible for the draft). They decide to commit one last, utterly senseless (and screamingly funny) slapstick act of rebellion, making a shambles of the university's annual homecoming parade, and, in the process, getting revenge on the dean, the Omegas, and everyone else who has ever gone against them. The producers of Animal House would have you believe that due to white privledge (I assume), these people can get away with multiple hit & runs on vehicles in the parking lot of a bar filled with black dudes - including some very intimidating ones, after loudly crashing into a car on their arrival which drew no attention, despite the fact that the door to said bar was right there, get naked back in the lot - their whiteness going unnoticed, then loudly fleeing without getting their asses kicked - and/or being followed by the brothers inside. Pure bullshit, that's seemingly humorous on the surface, until you add things like the "primitive cultures" comment, or Flounder's belittling "where do you go to school", & the general characterization of African Americans. "Do you mind if we dance wif yo' dates" is not as funny when there's that overall disrespect.

tunanorth (1 year ago)
The entire movie was bullshit; that's the point. Unless you believe that like in this scene, amateur golfers can hit a person accurately on the head from 200 yards. Or perhaps you buy that a Peeping Tom can jump sideways from window to window on a very tall ladder without falling to his death, or even alerting the residents. Absurdity from the first frame to the last was the exact target. Lighten up, Francis.

Donald "Boon" Schoenstein: A vicious mother, isn't he? Eric "Otter" Stratton: Yeah. He can't do that to our pledges. Donald "Boon" Schoenstein: Only we can do that to our pledges. Hooked🏌it. Shit. Slice. Eric "Otter" Stratton: Your left arm is straight, but you're not keeping your head down. Always try to hit through the ball. [Trooper🐎Dragging Douglas C. Neidermeyer For A Ride] [Douglas C. Neidermeyer's Screaming] Donald "Boon" Schoenstein: I gotta work on my game. Eric "Boon" Stratton: No, no, no. Don't think💭of it as work. The whole point☝️️is just to enjoy😊yourself.

According to Stephen Ambrose, a jeep transporting vital maps to Patton's command for an offensive in the Bulge was delayed because Patton's MPs would not let them into Third Army's HQ area with untidy uniforms and an unwashed jeep.

+Dmitri Kozlowsky Yup, this guy is basically a wannabe Patton with no war.
Dmitri Kozlowsky (1 year ago)
Its light hearted humor at the showmanship of Lt. Gen. General S. Patton. He was old school (for 1942) U.S. Cavalry officer. So he would wear U.S. Cav. boots , riding breeches, combined with then helmet. His uniform was of 'questionable' conformation to 1940's U.S. Army uniform regulations, but no-one could bring it up to him. Conversely he was strict as to soldiers under his command to their adherence to uniform regulations. Regardless , he was very effective officer, and his combat record proved it. So effective that German Intelligence (ABWEHR) was convinced, along with German OKW (High Command), that Patton was to command maneuver forces during Allied landing on French coast, and that Patton chose Pas De Calais. If nothing else, Americans, when they are determined, can be quite devious in deception.
