IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS:
Some of you have had a few problems with the settings, each copy of after effects may have some different default settings that have been set on previous projects. I have uploaded some images of the correct settings, so please double check your settings match these.
This tutorial uses "Ray Traced Rendering" so just save your project before you turn this on and i would double check your computer graphic card is compatible with after effects ray traced.

Hi welcome to the channel, to get material options you need to setup up the 3D aspects of the scene. The light and 3D layers. There are free reference files in description, download these images so you can check your settings. This will work in CS6. Thanks
Hi, thanks for the great tutorial, but i have some problems @7:00 : I can't see the shadows behind the letters, after set the spot light. I've checked all the settings and tried several times but i can't find my mistake. what's wrong?
Hi Riccardo, sounds like the background is not set to take the shadows. Download the free reference images in the description. This will help you check your layers to make sure they are correct. Thanks FPfx
Hi, Thank you very much for uploading these amazing tutorial. I am having a little problems though. My individual letters were not casting any shadows, I have followed all the steps, I have no idea why it is not casting shadows... If you have time, could you please help me with this?
Hey Allie, your letters may have accept lights on them. You will have to check if the extrude is set under the geometry options for each letter. If they are not extruding they won’t cast a shadow. There are free images of the settings in the description to check your settings. Hope that helps!
Hello, i have a problem i need your help if you have some time. I added the light put all parameters and i see the effect differently, i checked cast shadows to off and i saw that i have no "appears in reflections" maybe it's the problem ?
I have uploaded the file, if you have some times i will be very happy : https://www.dropbox.com/s/8hpy4h7dv0uimta/Projet%20sans%20titrezezeze.aep?dl=0
If you have no time, there is the options i have :
You are making great tutorials, you are a good teacher !! Thank you by advance if you have some time :)
Hey, I had a look at your template and found your problem. 1) Ray traced is not active, you need to activate that step. 2) then you will get the “geometry settings” appear for each layer. This allows you to match the settings in the image I uploaded. 3) your background layer needed a few things turned off under “material options”. Once I did that it all worked. Your screen should match 100% to the reference images I uploaded. Hope that helps! Thanks Flat Pack Fx
Flat Pack FX thanks for your quick answer ! i'll be waiting here in France it's 2PM ahah ! i checked this pictures as you will see in my pictures, but i will check it again to verify if I made some mistakes !
thank you very much again !
Hey mate, leave it with me and I’ll have a look tomorrow for you it’s the middle of the night here. There are some images that I upload in the description. They will give a good picture of some of the problems you may have. Thanks.
I was creating my own logo, so I changed the title and the font, but after changing the 3D renderer, I could not clearly read the title of my animation, I tried to put borders in the letters, but they did not appear in ray-traced 3D . I tried to create a black letter behind the white, with the larger font to simulate the border, but the effect was not as desired (the white letter shows black scratches, as if it were transparent).
Do you have any tips to make the text more readable?
Hey Celso, thanks for your comment. Can you send me a screenshot of your project so I can have a look? I think there may be something going on with the font or something you have used not being scalable. Cheers
Hi, I haven’t used uMake but I would say anything is possible. You probably couldn’t make it from scratch but you could export completed parts and import them into uMake. You can then layer the effect over your background in uMake. Thanks for the comment.
Hey WWE, there may be some settings that may differ on the layers for shadow functions. There is a link in the description to some screenshots. Check those against your settings most of the time people that are having an issue find one setting that may differ from those. Thanks Flat Pack
Hello! Thanks for this. I am trying to apply this to a customers logo. I basically made each letter a photoshop layer and imported each layer in to AE and applied all the settings to each layer and letter as you did. everything was looking great until I added the spot light and it is not creating any drop shadow with all the settings you provided, cast shadow is off. Can you not add a spot light to a photoshop layer???
Hey mate, thanks for your question. Unfortunately in after effect this effect will only work with text layers. You may need to type out your text in the don’t you have used for your photoshop file. Either way the only other way to do this is using a 3d program or get 3d elements for After Effects, there is an extrude function in that. That is a bit more advanced though, I will eventually cover this in a tutorial. Thanks FPfx
Hi mate, firstly make sure the layer is set as 3d 2) click the little triangle drop down on the left and look for material options underneath the transform heading. It won't be in the transform menu but underneath, hope that helps you out! Thanks FPfx
Hi, Simply use the section tool 'V' and select the letter on the screen and drag it back into place. Your copy of After Effects may have centre justification turned on under the character menu. Hope that helps!
Hi Guys! Some of you have had a few problems with the settings, each copy of after effects may have some different default settings that have been set on previous projects. I have uploaded some images of the correct settings, so please double check your settings match these.
I solved the problem, thanks a lot anyway. Your are doing a amazing job. Couple hours ago i finished the earth tutorial. I had it done with cinema 4d, but i had no idea how to do it in after effects. Thanks a lot for these tutorials flat pack fx
Hi David, Sorry to hear your having issues. The problem will be in the material options settings, make sure they are correct as in the video. I will uploaded some screen shots shortly of the settings to help you with a comparison. Cheers FPfx
Hi mate, at 7.22 my letters aren't showing up, there greyed out and not looking what as your characters, any idea's? Many thanks. Great tutorial by the way, by far the best to follow and I've been searching like a dog! Please definitely keep em coming, super helpful to get to know AE.
Flat Pack FX, Hi buddy, thanks very much for getting back to me, I thought I sorted it, but actually I didn't lol, I think started again. its a blur, I had to start again numerous times, but that was cool, more practise. Thanks again for reaching out, please def keep the tutorials classy and have that digital polish. Thank you indeed!
Hey Adrian, I have had a look at building it from scratch myself. One problem that isn't very clear is to make sure the 'cast shadows' is set to OFF under the 'Shadow Layer' material options. If your letters are not showing it will be something to do with the material options for each letter layer. I recommend going back and double checking those options again, or continue and a little further and i cover this in more detail. I am putting up a post to flag the cast shadows as it appears as on by default. If you get stuck i have also uploaded a copy of the project under the description, download that and cross check your settings. Worst case send your project to me and ill work out whats gone wrong. Thanks mate!
