I also love the other "callback" to the first campaign when they would harass the poor barmaid and tried EVERYTHING to find out what book she was reading. With it turning out to be the book that Scanlan had written about Vax.

What is the book referencing???
Critical Role Highlights (3 months ago)
A part of Sam's previous character Taryon Darrington from campaign 1 was that he was in the process of writing a book about his conquests as an adventurer. That was 20 years before this campaign takes place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG51xfUzfOg

This was like finding Montblanc in Final Fantasy Tactics A2 when you played Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced a long time ago. So magical~

It's interesting that the group talked to the one who was reading, but I wonder if they also should have talked to the one who was knitting. Wonder what he was knitting...
Lil Inkling024 (4 months ago)
I’m honestly on such a nostalgia trip with the oblivion music. But I love the Taryon Darrington book mention! XD

I completely flipped my shit when this happened live, my family started knocking on my door asking me if I was okay.

Sum it up for me, give me the floating disk pitch - that's hilarious.

So he did used Percy's title for the book haha

The D&D group I play with met on the Critical Role fanpage on Facebook; we started a campaign set 150 years after Vox Machina defeated Vecna. My character, a Tabaxi Rogue/Cleric, while searching an Ancient Dragon's library (rolled by our glorious DM) found a first-edition copy of "The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Ser Taryon Darrington". The book is currently in my characters possession. This show and its fans are the absolute: Bee's Knee's y'all!!
FyreMagyk67 (5 months ago)
I feel like I am listening to an old Northern Minnesotan when he does the voice for Pumat Sol
Cristi Baica (5 months ago)
Moments like this make Matt so great as a DM. I also love Sam's reaction. Can't wait for other stuff from the old campaign to be woven in the story!!
Ysh Rivera (5 months ago)
Amazing how Tarry was just supposed to be in the campaign for a few sessions but everyone fell in love with him, including Sam himself (he admitted that he was expecting Tarry to die after a few combats), now we see a glimpse of how he's doing right after the first campaign. Gotta love Matt for rewarding his players in that way.

If I recall correctly, Tary himself IS from the Dwndalian Empire and the Darington Estate is located in Deastok in the same empire. It might be a stretch, but it would be absolutely amazing if the Mighty Nein got to meet Tary in person.
Critical Role Highlights (5 months ago)
Indeed he is so it makes sense that it was ordered from there.
Dani Hay (5 months ago)
I like Matt was obviously trying to get someone to ask what Pumat was reading
gjaddajg (5 months ago)
I can't help but wonder how different the world would actually be when magic is as commonplace as it is in Exandria. Of course, we're just having fun here and magic is fun - but, if you really think about it, there's probably a lot of things that don't really make much sense. For instance: wouldn't all bars and taverns have one of these bottles of endless booze? Wouldn't the whole alcohol industry dry out when every small town could just collect enough money to buy one and they'd be good for the rest of their lives? No one would ever have to buy alcohol again.
gjaddajg (3 months ago)
Every single person doesn't need a bottle. Pretty much any small community could get one, though. And those too small would just gravitate to the ones that do have one. Realistically, in a world like this, there's no starvation, so yeah, it would be very different. They could literally just put a few bottles on their heads and let them flow and you'd have a river of whatever liquid you want. Now, if Matt had put a limit on how much liquid it could produce a day it'd be a different story. Or if the bottle was a rare artifact that you couldn't just make more of.
JT (3 months ago)
It probably wouldn't be that different. I don't know about this setting specifically but I've played and DMed for others and the average person doesn't make a lot of money, something like a copper a week. So it would take a very long time for a normal person to make that kind of money. Adventurers make a whole lot more than the average joe so only adventurers or the very rich could afford it. That's if you could even find someone powerful enough to make it since it would be a higher level spell to even create something like that. You could find a lot of the lower level magics but the higher the level the harder it is to find in the first place.

Erik Kim (5 months ago)
I enjoy how Matt plays the reference from the first campaign. It's not a full character push, but rather a small change in the world that the characters influenced. Even though I enjoy the adventures of Vox Machina, I hope that Matt will keep their parts small in this new adventure. This reference to Tary's book is an example of what is an appropriate tribute to Vox Machina.
Cyrano Johnson (5 months ago)
It's not called "Tarry On with Taryon Darington"? Blast and damn! :D Aside: I notice Sam's characters often have substance-abuse storylines. After the setup and emotional sting he delivered in the first campaign with Scanlan, you'd think the group would be a little less blase about just laughing off Nott the Drunk.
Krzyffo (5 months ago)
The Sam's eyebrow flicked at "collection of crazy tales about this wierd fellow". He knew what was coming xd

Paragon of Honor (5 months ago)
I mean, as much as I am literally flipping dying head over heals for the first ever legit call back to the first adventure, I wonder how much Matt is going to tie in and call back to the last campaign. I feel they will eventually make it to white stone where Percy has revolutionized the place with steam and metal and maybe even electricity, and maybe someone will get a gun? or maybe they will go to Ahn'Karel and meet the meat man and get in their good graces and have a crime boss on their side? so much potential with an all new twist! Although I feel like Tarry's place is first since it is on the same continent. Or maybe Matt will only keep it lingering on the outskirts, having only whispers and rumors and Easter eggs of the last campaign? having entirely new plans and places for them to go? as bittersweet as the ending to campaign 1 was, one of my favorite things is seeing what actually happens after the story ends.
Alf Tuvik (5 months ago)
Matt has made it pretty clear that vox machina's story is over and doesn't want to focus on them. This was just a fun nod, which makes sense since they are so close to Tary's home. But everyone else will probaby not show up until much later in the campaign, I'm sure we'll see some or at least more nods at the old campaign, but I wouldn't expect a lot until a lot later if/when it makes more sense.
Chris Meade (5 months ago)
We are gonna be in the Empire for quite a while. When they get some teleportation magic it might open up the whole world, but the earliest Caleb can get teleport is level 13 when he gets one single 7th level spell slot - and he may want something else at that point. Transport via plants is Druid only so he has to wait for 7th level slots to open up
Overdonespawn (5 months ago)
I wanna see what has changed in Vasselheim after the events of the final ark. Also Whitestone How has Percy built it up in 20 odd years
S Toy (5 months ago)
I've wondered this idly before... Do you reckon Matt brings these voices home at "certain times"... or more disturbingly, are they requested of him?
Timberwolf410 (5 months ago)
That Taryington name-drop was one of the most beautiful moments in this episode for me; I nearly cried at Sam's reaction. Just wonderful! Matt's amazing (:
Tattagreis89 (5 months ago)
5:34 one of the most wholesome things ive ever seen ^^
David Chung (5 months ago)
All right, a direct reference to the first campaign! I just loved seeing the group's reactions to hearing the name of the book Pumat Sol was reading
boredanddireected (5 months ago)
i started crying at one in the morning over a fictional book written by a fictional character
Boogie Man (5 months ago)
That pretty much sums up D&D.
williamwall (5 months ago)
I literally fist-pumped the air when Matt said the name of the book
Charles Gillilan (5 months ago)
The best part is Sam's reaction when he realized that it was happening. Keep up the good work.
EthalaRide (5 months ago)
You know how one can get excited or enthusiastic when watching something and kinda scream or squee but there is little to no air coming out so it's very faint sound, like a whisper or whistle... *That was NOT me* at 5:46. I actually *full volume startle-screamed* at almost 2am as if I woke up with a spider next to my face. I was so worried I woke up my parents but there was so much HAPPENING!
thick MclargeHuge (5 months ago)
he finished this book. i'm so happy matt added this, for Sam's sake.

Cecilia Chong (5 months ago)
I have been waiting for him to make an appearance. They are very close to Deastok! Later Pumat describes VM as a bunch of powerful idiots that just mess up every adventure (from Tarry's point of view)
Samantha Nicole (5 months ago)
Sam’s absolute joy, so cute.
Tosh Omni (5 months ago)
I've been wondering when Tary would show up. I'm a bit disappointed that the Mighty Nein didn't make a beeline to his hometown once they got the map but maybe they don't remember the name of it?
Evad Thebest (5 months ago)
Stop trying to force things thats already done, the cast already accepted VMs story as DONE. It was a hella fun ride, but no need to cling on it so tightly that you would ruin the tight story right now (thats hella good) to make a trip down your nostalgia lane. Just rewatch the 1st campaign if you're so eager to see the old story. Just stop.
Kia Not The Car (5 months ago)
exactly, it's their game, not yours, just let the game run it's natural progression, nobody wants to force something to happen just because they can
Hose Clamp (5 months ago)
wraithryder what are you talking about? That's almost over, they got paid for it already. And the bigger question of going to the academy can be done whenever they want. There's no other quest for them to do. What's to stop them? Why are you being such a dick and saying their fun is wrong? It's their game not yours.
Chris Meade (5 months ago)
Tosh Omni You're right, opinions are subjective, but that doesn't mean they are equal. Your idea is your opinion - it is still a bad idea. It would totally kill the story and would be meta gamey as hell (I'm sorry, you can't spin it any other way. You're just wrong here). It's ok to be wrong and I know being told that can make you double down rather than accept reality. I understand. Let's just enjoy the show and see where it goes.
Mune mu'ne (5 months ago)
They have zero reasons to be going there. "They could just make up a reason" yes they could, but they didn't, probably in the future? It's up to them, not you. This is their game, not yours, they have their own "what is good, bad and fun" meeting any of the VM this early in the campaign (second town) for no reason is what I'd call bad story, Matt could have a whole story arc for them to discover what those characters have been up to. I'd like a build up for any of their reveal.

I like Matt saying “oh that’s terrible...” to Laura’s terrible dream as he looks down and perhaps writes it down for the future.
David M (4 months ago)
Are there any rules on simulacrum hacking?
DreamPen (4 months ago)
There are so many ways Pumat Sol and simulacra can become a big dramatic twist in the campaign. My take on it is for the simulacra turning on Pumat Sol Prime- with the Mighty Nein arriving to do some shopping only to discover the grisly result.
David M (5 months ago)
I'm curious whether her dream was of them sitting at the table and role-playing it, or if it actually played out in character.
Amy Livingston (5 months ago)
I think if something like this happens, it will not be Pumat Prime who attacks them but the simulacra. Since he didn't create them himself, they are technically under the control of their creators, who are from the Cerberus Assembly, and if the Mighty Nein become recognized enemies of the empire, the Assembly might use this route to get at them.
Maddor (5 months ago)
I've been convinced from the outset that Pumat is evil. I don't think he had to write that idea down lol
gabthegreat01 (5 months ago)
Oh i could watch that reaction for hours...oh wait, I did!
charles junior (5 months ago)
Can someone explain the joke near the end about the book?
BlueBerryxz (5 months ago)
Without spoiling: Sam briefly played a character named Taryon Darrington in the first campaign who was writing a book about his adventures. This is apparently the finished book, so everyone got pretty hyped about it showing up.

I started crying and stopped paying attention for a while cause my tears were in the way and I was trying not to scream Our Tary has made it. He’s out there. Also I’m sure Scanlan’s Vox Machina adventures book is out there too and Pumat will be reading eventually after he finishes Tary’s book. I will probably cry more

MarkD1159 (5 months ago)
First VM appearance in the new campaign, isn't it?
Cody M (5 months ago)
Its the first direct reference to the events of VM, everything else is considered Easter eggs. The trinket and elven disguises would be that.
TitoRag (5 months ago)
There has been a few nods at the first campaign like Nott saying that she loves Trinket(s) and Fjord saying that he's not an ale guy
FallenStargazer43 (5 months ago)
And it was jester first and caleb said ill basically be the male version of her disguise, so little nod to them being twins from last campaign. But yes they disguised themselves as full blooded elves.
EpicPie9121 (5 months ago)
Kilimunjaro153 in fact they said elf and not half elf
EpicPie9121 (5 months ago)
Kilimunjaro153 that was just a slight lil nod to vex and vax, they didn't actually disguise themselves as them
sechmet987 (5 months ago)
That's really lovely for Matt to include this, Sam as we all saw must've felt ecstatic. That's some great DMing right there
Livsyn side (5 months ago)
when i watched it live, i was so happy for them!! \(^.^)/ especially for Sam, because it was his character ^^ it felt like I (as one of the viewers) also achieved something xD
Frosty1stAid (5 months ago)
Is this the first direct reference to the first campaign? (Other than Caleb and Jester disguising as Vex and Vax.)
TitoRag (5 months ago)
And Fjord is not an Ale guy
Yan Tse (5 months ago)
Well, Nott loves Trinket(s).
jadafun (5 months ago)
Josh Kaid Liam probably made him do it as a reference though, even if Laura hadn't intended to make Jester look like Vex. Not saying it couldn't be a coincidence, just seemed like he was purposefully going for the in joke there.
Josh Kaid (5 months ago)
Jules C They didn't. Jester disguised herself as an elven woman, so Liam, as a joke, made Caleb disguise himself as the male version of her. They looked nothing like Vex and Vax.
Androktasiai (5 months ago)
Episode 11. It wasn't explicit though, just a small joke

#Tary'sTallTales Get it trending. I heard Taryon Darrington once sneezed and destroyed half of Emon. I heard Taryon Darrington once defeated a kraken by himself. I heard that Taryon Darrington is secretly a werewolf. I heard Taryon Darrington rescued a little elf girl from the streets of Ank'Harel and she became his maidservant. I heard Taryon Darrington took on a bloodthirsty goliath unarmed and won. I heard that Taryon Darrington fought an ENTIRE LEGION OF HELL SINGLEHANDEDLY AND LIVED.
