Those small arms were from the stock of the TO (territorial defense). Every Republic had their TO, something like Swiss and Austria. Our TO class in High School included assembling and disassembling various weapons, among them German Schmeisserr, MG-45 plus feeding and barbell replacement but no live fire. The only live fire we 'qualified' was with the M-48 rifle. Also we learned to arm anti-tank (RPG) i think it was M-57 recoiless??? Also anti-tank mine, anti personal trip and clay-more etc...all part of the tenth grade ciriculum. The Average American would freak out!

Winston's Engines & Remanufacturing Not so "unbelievable" at all. Following WW2 Yugoslavia license built German Mausers and German automatic weapons. Others were modified to fire local cartridges like the MP40 smg which became the Zastava M56. Some were indeed left from WW2 while others were locally produced Zastava Arms versions which remained in production well into the 1980's. Also most old weapons were mothballed and stored in arms depots to be readily available in the case of a foreign invasion. Ironically enough a foreign invasion never came and all the guns were used in a devastating civil war instead. There was a foreign arms embargo during the civil war of the former Yugoslavia so local militia (evident by their lack of proper military gear) and insurgency groups simply grabbed what they could get their hands on. Military training was compulsory for everybody in the former Yugoslavia and some even had to serve two full years of training. This means that most people knew how to use arms and had had their military training. Others simply learned from their experienced elders and local commanders. This is how that civil war was a bloody mess.

What do u think the allies did with all the weapons captured post ww2,they sold em off to small countries who had no military.the us was scrapping brand new never used planes just for the cost efficient.they had mountains of captured weapons an stockpiles alreaady in the E.U theater ,plus why do you think we can still buy surplus ww2,Korea and Vietnam weapons.because the govt just sells EM off in mass quantities.but also things like bombs ,we used Vietnam era made bombs in ww2.only like 3% of bombs dropped in gulf war 1 were smart weapons.they were used for city targets and special high priority targets.shit the mg is still a bad ass gun that fires faster than thee browning.its just not as durable in the long run with the rollers.yeah it can swap barrels, but too many parts
Patrick Ilmoni (2 years ago)
The massive amount of arms and almost anything and everything produced during WWII was suddenly standing on the shelf. The arms were bound to end up somewhere. When we add to that amount all the surplus arms and equipment from the whole Cold war-era the numbers are even more staggering. This was naturally the case considering what NATO-countries were forced to prepare themselves for back then. Not to mention the mega-leftovers from Warsaw-pact countries. They were quick to sell. Ironically much of what wasnt sold of this hardware intended for a possible "Red storm rising"- scenario in Europe ended up in the Middle-East. And I believe the 3 % of "smart weapons" you mentioned regardin the ordnance used in the operation "Desert storm" is accurate enough, but I would like to know your source on that number. Anyways, the amount of quite "ordinary bombs" used to "take out" or "softening up" the designated target-areas as a pentagon spokesman used to call the bombings, was huge. However, the well orchestrated media campaign gave the wider audience a strong impression of these "surgically accurate" laser-guided bombs, and all kinda high-tech gizmoes were bein conducted almost exclusively. This massive and long lasting air-campaign gave a unique opportunity for the USAF and others to get rid of stockpiles of bombs by throwin all sorta old stuff at Saddams war machine, and especially bunkers and potential HQ residences. It is said that at some point they even started running out of the most effective "smart missiles" after poundin Iraqi bunkers, bridges and almost everything 24/7. And who knows, maybe there were a bit too many of those potential high-value targets.

M1A1 Thompson and MG42 were still made in Yugoslavia after world war two. M56 looks like the MP40. Also I may have missed it. Did you have M4 Sherman tanks? They used them on all sides of the Yugoslav wars. I have been told a German Panzer was used on Serbian side. Have not seen photos. Only old wrecked Panzer

Ye Wise Mountain Goat (10 days ago)
Za Sensha Chi-Ha Tan No Esu "I meant there were no hellcat used in eastern front so how did they got it there?" It's clear you neither know your geography nor history so let me explain it all to you. It'll make perfect sense to you once you read. First of all Yugoslavia was never a part of the former Soviet Union so it wasn't what you seem to believe (?) some former Soviet republic like say the Ukraine or Estonia etc. Fact is it didn't even border the former Soviet Union. It was never in any "Eastern front" either as the locals liberated the country mostly themselves (the axis redeploying an Italy surrendering in 1943 also helped). Second of all Yugoslavia was *never* a Soviet satellite state either and never in the Warsaw Pact. You see Yugoslavia broke from the Comintern (COMunist INTERNational) in 1948 already. This made Stalin furious and he contemplated teaching Tito (leader of Yugoslavia 1943-1980) a lesson and to invade Yugoslavia. Tito basically told Moscow Yugoslavia would forge their *own* path and find their own version of communism "Titoism" - which was a stark contrast to the totalitarian Stalinism. Tito's break with Stalin made the USA glad however and Tito (real name Josip Broz) became front page cover in many American magazines (including Times). Why were they glad? Well, here was a man who told Stalin to go the he*l and broke all relations so it pleased them. During this time the USA actually tried to groom Yugoslavia to join them in a military pact and had American aircraft carriers in the Adriatic sea with Yugoslav guests on board. As such Yugoslavia was included in the post-war *Marshal Plan* to rebuild Europe and was the only socialist country in Europe to receive American funds and goods. This meant that the country received American tramways, trucks, jeeps and war surplus material still in Europe. Since the USA were well aware Stalin contemplated invading Yugoslavia they decided they had to support any "enemy of my enemy". As such Yugoslavia got to buy surplus American WW2 weapons since all those were going to be scrapped anyway as development had made them superfluous for the American army. This is how a lot of Sherman tanks ended up in Yugoslavia. Fact is when they shot the Clint Eastwood film "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) they shot the film in Yugoslavia because they still had a lot of operational Sherman tanks in their armed forced. The M18 Hellcat and M36 Jacksons also ended up in Yugoslavia after WW2 and at the time the USA tried to groom Yugoslavia to become a "friendly state". This was called the *Mutual Assistance Pact* In 1951 Yugoslavia received 150 P-47D Thunderbolt fighter bombers. In 1953 they received 229 F-84G Thunderjets. And between 1954 and 1956 121 F-86 Sabre jets. American F-86 Sabres can still be seen with Yugoslav markings in the Yugoslav airforce museum in Belgrade. So Yugoslavia did receive American weapons from 1948 to the mid 1950's. This is how these weapons you see here ended up there. Not due to some "Soviet lend-lease to the Eastern Front" which you so wrongly believe. However, Tito had no intention to put his country on the frontline and had he become an active member of NATO or even a "friendly state" then he knew his country would become the fighting ground for any future war between the superpowers. The very thought scared him. So he simply maintained Yugoslavia's "third way" neutrality. Later Tito formed the *Non-Aligned Movement* in 1961 with Egypt's leader Nasser and India's leader Nehru. The idea was to stay out of any of the superpower's business and find a third way and to stay out of any war. For this reason Yugoslavia's army purchased French Aerospatiale helicopters, Swedish Bofors guns (Sweden was a neutral country too but never sold to Soviet states), Italian license built vehicles, American Maverick air-to-ground missiles etc. In the 1960's relationships with the Soviet Union were revised after Stalin's death so Yugoslavia purchased Soviet jets and missiles too. Despite this there was never any idea in Tito's mind he would join the Warsaw Pact when he already had started the Non-Alligned Movement in 1961. So for this reason you saw a lot of both western and eastern arms end up in former Yugoslavia. And since they retro-engineered and license build foreign arms a lot of those "German MG42'" were actually Yugoslav produced versions with their own designation. The famous Soviet assault rifle AK47 was developed into the Yugoslav Zastava M70 (which is well-liked among western arms collectors and sports shooters). Former Yugoslavia was sort of a "middle-ground" between the former West and East blocs. As such it also had some level of self-governing trade on local and small level and as such wasn't a "Soviet state" with total state control. Western goods were available for those who could afford them... (few). Yugoslav work visas were viable in any European country so nothing kept the locals stuck in their own country - they could leave to work abroad at will. Hardly something you could say for the people living in the Warsaw Pact countries who never could leave their countries freely and without special permits. Long story short. The USA was selling arms to Yugoslavia from 1948 to the mid 1950's because it tried to groom it into a "ally" or "friendly country". Also, Stalin's idea to invade Yugoslavia came to a fast end when the Korean War started in 1950 and he realized he had *far* more pressing issues to deal with. Last of all. These WW2 weapons here were mostly mothballed and stuffed away in rural areas. The fighters seen here are mostly local militia and insurgency groups fighting in those areas. Since there was a weapons embargo on all former Yugoslav republics (in an effort to prevent the war from becoming bloodier still) locals groups simply picked up any old guns they could find and purchased WW1 and WW2 arms from black market arms dealers which came from who knows where. The old Yugoslav army (which "officially" wasn't involved but unofficially was) used more contemporary arms - which truth to be told were scarce as it would become painfully obvious Serbia was supporting the Serbs in Bosnia. Hope you enjoyed this info. If not you others will too.

Please use google to correct your eng so I can understand you better. It happened because West didnt like big communist state with big economy and army in the Europe,Germany wanted dominance so the along with Britain,France....etc NATO funded Tudjam(Croat) and Alija(Bosnian) small political figures at that time to yet again start old war from the WW2. Because this region was always hot spot for religions and nationality questions that were bad because people hated each others for that(because that was reason we killed each other in past) that was used as reason to dismantle. Crimes done on WW2 were not dealt with in time and Yugoslavia was one big project Forget and Forgive as well as because of Communisam there was no religion problem and for the time it was great we had big impact on Europe and the world and we really see break true from 1970-1989 we had better standards that America. Then 1989 happened Slovenia first wanted our. Slovenia was small country but with lots of factories and economy impact on Yugoslavia most industrial. Then 10 day war happened YPA(Yugoslavian People Army) witch was 5 largest army in 1985 stormed in and took of strategic points. But because Slovenia didnt got many people with other nationality they were given independence after YPA wit more or less peaceful way. Croatia in 1991 wanted also independence but they were more aggressive after they saw that YPA has power to stop them.So they formed armed groups and started killing Serbs population who were then 18% of all people in Croatia.YPA then responded with armed actions in Dubrovnik,Vukovar, shelling of Zagreb also started because Croatian armed groups(Ustashe, name they took after 1942 Nazi supporters)fought mostly in cities as they didnt have weapons to answer. Artillery,Armored forces,Navy and Air-Force that YPA had proved to be too much for Croatia so they then started negotiations from 1991-1992 piece was made and YPA retreat but left armed Serbian para-militans with weapons to defend its self.Croatia then fought with Serbian militans for like 4 years, got weapons from West and last fight took place in 1995 where Croatia gain independence and waged victory as well as misplaced by force more then 200 000 Serbs from Croatia that had 4 milions at that time, and killed 100 000 of extra ones.

+Neven Dary Yes, I agree, Yugoslavia kinda kept them off killing, but they made brakedown in order to achieve their utopian goals. Once Ustasha and Chetnik got to be rulers it is obvious that Yugoslavia will fall. Ustashas want Nazism and Chetniks want Kingdom. And Yugoslavia being stronger ideology, communism, kept them off fighting and let normal people live normal lives. Now when Yuogslavia is gone both of them crawled out of their caves and started their pladge of hatered and brainwashing more people to accept their utopian ideologies and more and more people are turned towards them and start hating others. The problem is that they have their freedom of speech that in communism they did not have. In communism they had to keep their mouth shut not to get punished and that was good, stupid people with utopian ideologies were to be shut up, but unfortunatly once communism was gone they crawled out and started brainwashing people. But communism was golden age. It was simple ideology, exterminate people that dont want to work or be like others, like Ustashas and Chetniks, and let normal people live normal lives and turn your country into industrial and military superpower. No one could touch Yugoslavia. Only thing that could get it down was brakedown and countries that wanted independency thinking it will be better but it turned much worse than Yugoslavia was. Now from country that was untouchable it turned into few countries fucked by everyone and full of people with stupid ideologies.
balkserk (1 year ago)
There is a lot of truth in your words but you have to know couple more things. For example, look at yugoslavia as 3 main groups. Ustashas, Chetniks and Normal people. The thing is those first two groups are ready to kill for their goals. Every time there was some reform or revolution, it was bloody. Wheter it was bloody from the inside or from other countries. Normal people are tired of death, there was too much of it. And these asshole politicians are pushing us into war again because they are chetniks and ustashas.
CptMisha (1 year ago)
+Neven Dary Idealizing democracy by saying that someone wish to go back to communism because it was better? I just tell you how politics work. It is not just "rulers" that decide what they will do with country. And if people dont like that there would be mess in countries. The problem is that you think that everyone sees other as brother, while it is totally opposite. The hatered is largest with Croats and Serbs. People hate each other, politics try to stay neutral to each other. But communism was golden age of those countries. Everyone wants that back, but they dont want others to have the good idelogy, they want others to fail. But now looking at Croatia, people are much more turned to Nazism than communism, but Bosnia and Serbia are "for good old days". But Bosnia doesnt like Serbia but tries to remain neutral towards it. Croatia thinks it can create something by it own, Serbia now tries to be friend with all, west and east, but it will need to choose because west doesnt want from Serbia to work with East and East doesnt want from Serbia to work with West. Bosnia is curently on it`s own, does not cooperate with anyone that much that it needs to decide on which side to go, it is neutral. And of course not all people are like that, but most are from all countries. The problem is, everyone dislike each other. All because of war that better did not happened, turned country that was greater than many, into few worhless countries that are fucked by everyone. But that war made all those countries hate each other because all fough each other, sure Croatia was afterwards neutral towards Bosnia, but they did kill Bosnians and also did warcrimes until they went into war against Yugoslavia themselvs. Sure Macedonians, Slovenians and Montenegrians dont hate anyone, at least not that much. But those 3 countries are totally divided, 3 worlds next to each other and each of them dislike the others. Everyone think they are above other.

This is the one you are talking about? https://www.mycity-military.com/imgs2/159270_79267457_horvatskayasamodelka.jpg This is not production to supply the army, is it? "Rucni rad" means "hand made". So, how can you talk about factories in Rijeka (btw, which was annexed by Fascist Italy in those days, and it wasn't part of NDH), Zagreb and Karlovac. I've heard this legends about automatic pistol that is exhibited in Belgrade military museum, and for which they claim it was made in village Celebic, near Livno. Even if it was made, it has never been made in serial production, so what regular army could have been supplied with those. But, there is another problem with this claim. In 1944, Livno and that area was already taken by communist partisans. Explain me, how did they manage to supply "regular army", if production was in hands of enemy?

Can you name some of those weapons?
mihajlo olujic (2 years ago)
Wow, I just culdn't belive thar lewis gun... That is a DUTCH post ww1 variant of the lewis in 6,5mm Dutch. It was captured in large numbers by the Germans in ww2, and brought to Yugoslavia in order to arm kvisling (colaborator) forces. These were moatly issued to SDK (Ljotićevci) and the point of having this weapon in such a strange calibre is so that Germans can control just how much ammo these colaborators have so they can't turn against them.
AAA AAA (2 years ago)
The Nazi controlled ammo to prevent the collaborators from turning weapons on the Nazi because some of them did this. They did not like the Nazi. Only used them against their own enemies and as a source of weapons

Pozdrav i odjava.

Vladimir Vukajlovic (2 years ago)
Pozdrav.

Kafko (2 years ago)
I seriously got really excited to see that T34 in action, especially in relatively modern times. So here's something to think about: what would happen if the WW2 era German army went to war with ISIS? Modern technology versus antique.
Kafko (2 years ago)
+Bill Connor It's always been that with traditional warfare, it's just different tools, and locations.
Jason Donovan (2 years ago)
+ANx3h I think the Soviets needed more of a mass of troops than the Germans.  I do think the 1945 Soviets would decimate ISIS though too.  Especially with all the submachine guns for close quarters.  It's amazing how combat is still a soldier and his rifle for the most part.
Kafko (2 years ago)
+Bill Connor Yeah. It'd be even worse for ISIS if it were a WW2 era Soviet Army. More specifically, KV-2s, and IS-2s against T-72s, and whatever makeshift things the insurgents make, or have.
Jason Donovan (2 years ago)
+ANx3h No more ISIS if that happened.  Especially if it were the SS.

martK banjoboy (2 years ago)
Just thought of something. The vid showed numerous Jackson tank destroyers, M18 Hellcat light tanks, a few M4 Sherman medium tanks, and maybe some M48 tank destroyers. If I am not mistaken, lend-lease tanks like these were usually fitted with a rack of Thompson Submachine Guns along with their accoutrements. Usually from what I heard, when these tanks made it to their destination units, the TSMGs were taken out & put in storage & the AFV crews were issued something that it was possible to get ammunition for, such as a PPSH-41 or PPS - 43
autistic jedi (2 years ago)
+martK banjoboy probably those few years after tito broke up with stalin and balanced between east n west.
martK banjoboy (2 years ago)
Gypsies didn't sell them to Tito. There must have been US arms sales to Tito post war. I also never stated that M48 tanks were WWII tanks, but good on you for pointing that out to those who might not know. :-)
autistic jedi (2 years ago)
+martK banjoboy also, hellcat is a tank destroyer and M48 patton is vietnam era main battle tank. just sayin.
autistic jedi (2 years ago)
+martK banjoboy yugoslavia wasn't part of a lend-lease deal. ww2 yugo partisans didn't have almost any tanks, airplanes or heavy weaponry in general. it was guerrilla warfare. those hellcats and shermans where given (or bought) right after the war i think - im not totally sure. after that yugo army decided soviet weaponry was better/more suitable and easier to get licence for. these thompsons where mostly black-market bought/given by/to croats i the nineties - again..not totally sure and to lazy to research it.
ravnica1 (2 years ago)
Some background why vintage weaponry.Yugoslavia's defense doctrine was Total People's Defense - it had roots in WWII and a very specific geographical and political position Yugoslavia found itself in during Cold War.  It was perceived that any aggressor from East or West would have an overwhelming advantage in weapons. The doctrine resulted in two components of the Armed Forces - Yugoslav Peoples Army (YPA) and Territorial Defense in theorry deploying up to 8 million people in active resistance. Territorial Defense was devolved to the constituent Republics and when the country became to disintegrate it became nucleus of the new independent armed forces. Territorial defense was routinely armed with the weaponry that was YPAa surplus to requirements, although some units received modern weapons. Therefore Territorial defense had in it's arsenal vintage weapons well into 80s and 90s.  Worth nothing some of the weapon designs where of such quality they were locally produced and remained in YPAs arsenal up to the 90s. MG42 was reversed engineered in Zastava factory and produced as M53, Therefore the specimens seen in the video may not necessarily originate from WWII

schizoidboy (3 years ago)
Interesting facts there, I do remember seeing some of their firearms listed in book on firearms, some which are copies but others that are original. Thank you.
easleybadboy (3 years ago)
+schizoidboy  Yugoslavia has one the premier weapons industries in the world. Their versions of he AK47 are second to none. In my opinion they are even better than the Russian ones. Most of their other domestic made weaponry is also world class. Those folks over there have been fighting wars for centuries and they know a thing or two about how to make a fine weapon. Tito also turned them into an industrialized nation with the ability to manufacture their own stuff so if they didn't get a part from somewhere else they could simply make it unlike many of the second world nations out there.
Gary Armstrong (3 years ago)
Those weapons may be just be old. But if neither side has modern weapons, they'll kill you just as dead. Some will even work well, like the MG42, on the modern battlefield. It is a weapon far ahead of it's time.
mladjan jovanovic (1 year ago)
@gary armstrong you don`t know a shit. first victim in croatia was a serb, killed by croats. first victim in bosnia was serb, too. and he is kill by muslims. if you wonna talk about war in former yugoslavia, read some books, not cnn news. yugoslavia was big country with many nationality. among them, croats has a history associated with Nazi Germany, they has a concentration camp where during the Second World War killed 700,000 Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. if only you knew, they had a concentration camp for kids. and that is truth and historical facts. although i do not expect one Anglo-Saxon to use the brain when there cnn to think instead

+Marin F. To be sure...my remark was made in truth. But not as a compliment to those using the weapons. The breakup of the former Yugoslavia should have, and could have, looked to the breakup of Czechoslovakia...the Velvet Divorce. Instead, one side chose to brutally kill the other. That would primarily be the Serbs.
Marin F. (2 years ago)

Demir Pruzljanin (3 years ago)
Yeah, yugoslav version of MG-42 was M-53,but yeah, there was some WWII models of MG-42 in war.
chapiit08 (3 years ago)
The largest percentage of WWII weapons were in the hands of civilians BEFORE the Balkan wars of the 90´s Many people had and still have weapons in attics and basements all over Europe. I know for a fact as I was shown a few Mauser K98, a Sten and a MP40, all of them in Italy, back in the 80's During the Balkan wars a lot of WWII arms surfaced and were seen in the hands of militias and regular citizens and I'm sure that a many of them plus a lot of the more modern weapons are kept today in basements, attics and barns all over the Balkan countries.

Why didn't they try to get some old soviet weapons surely ammunition and the guns themselves would have been easier to find and probably cheaper
Harold Weaver Smith (3 years ago)
+conor blaides No far from it: Yugoslavia was one of the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement. Tito had a massive fall-out with Stalin in 1948 and after that they got Marshall Plan aid from the west. After Stalin died, things were patched up a bit and Yugoslavia started getting Soviet gear again, but they still remained independent of the WP.
conor blaides (3 years ago)
+Harold Smith fuck I thought they were Warsaw pact I guess the west would have been pretty desperate to get an Eastern European country on their side but wouldn't Stalin have been just as desperate to get an ally or did he just not focus on them
Harold Weaver Smith (3 years ago)
+conor blaides They were communist but not in the Warsaw Pact so the west was trying to pull them our way. They even got F-86 Sabres and M-47 tanks which were the latest thing at the time. They also got a manufacturing licence for the Rolls-Royce Viper jet engine which went on the power the Galeb, Jastreb, Orao and Super-Galeb, and they built Alouette and Gazelle helos under licence too.
