You're a life saver, just saved me about $3000 on my next shoot since I don't have to buy a TS lens now!
DOD Media (4 hours ago)
If you've got the budget, nothing beats that organic feel of a tilt shift! But at the same time this can be tweaked in post in a way the organic image can't.
laurent tartarin (15 days ago)
thanks heaps for your tutorial really really helpfull
Mikael Björnson (2 months ago)
Why not just make a subtraction mask on the adjustment layer itself? Why bother with the blur map?
DOD Media (2 months ago)
Because that won't give you a gradual blur, that'll give you a weird transition section of blurry and non blurry footage. The effect needs the black and white data to gradient the effect properly.
Sparkey (2 months ago)
Thanks for this! :)
Steve Cullen (3 months ago)
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. It was exactly the information I was searching for.

Hey, great tutorial. I just started playing with tilt-shift. I made a test footage vidoe. If you could give me some tips on it for a minute that would be amazing! liked and subbed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXcn3oeAOMU

DOD Media Thanks for your time. I do realize I have a lot to learn and will have to keep experimenting and growing. Thanks for the great tutorial. I will try again.
DOD Media (5 months ago)
Hey Corey, nice shots with the Spark! I like the idea behind what you did, masking out the blur so it affected everything but the road. I think it complicates the shots a bit too much though, in my opinion. The idea behind tiltshift is that it miniaturizes everything by blurring opposing sides of the screen, be it left and right or top and bottom. But that being said, it's your artistic choice to go in any direction you choose. The most important thing is to keep creating! :-)
Petter Faye-Wevle (7 months ago)
nice vid, it helped me alot. I just . want to say that the music is a bit annoying.
Petter Faye-Wevle (7 months ago)
trial and error :)
DOD Media (7 months ago)
Cheers for watching! Yeah I try and avoid using music during the actual tutorial parts now. Had to be tried to know it wasn't right though ;-)
ArnoldVeeman (8 months ago)
I really have to buy a new screen . . . I still work with 2 hd screens, so your video still looks almost incomprehensibly small . . . ;-) but I get by. Thank you for sharing this tip!
Jari Sipilainen (26 days ago)
with 4k monitor it will be even more smaller
DOD Media (8 months ago)
Yeah I try and stick with my macbook for tutorials as best I can since the screen is closer to 16:9, but occasionally I need to use the other machines which are both on this ultrawide monitor, since the Macbook is from 2012 and can't handle much without the fans going wild ;-) Cheers for watching!

Many thanks man

Hi DOD, great TUT thanks man! could you point me in the direction of the LUT you have used for the footage? many thanks!
DOD Media (9 months ago)
Thanks! The LUT I made for this which you can see in the start of the video is a more subtle variation of the famous M31 LUT. I'll be packaging up a few of my LUTs shortly and putting them on my store. If you're interested, head over to sellfy.com/dodmedia and hit subscribe so you can be notified when I release a new product. It may well have a heavy discount on it when it launches ;-)

Very nice :)
Jesse Rockwell (10 months ago)
Fantastic tutorial. I have done the effect on a timelapse of hot air balloons. The clip is 4k and 15ish seconds long. Media Encoder is telling me ~10 hours to render with a GTX 1070... WTF?
Jari Sipilainen (26 days ago)
rendering blur is allways long.mayby you render software
DOD Media (10 months ago)
Ooph, yeah that sounds oddly long. What are your other system specs? And are you exporting this as a 24, 25, 30fps clip? And at what compression?
Elliot Robinson (11 months ago)
God, I love YouTube.
AfterFourth (11 months ago)
thanks for the great tutorial bro.. =D
DOD Media (10 months ago)
Thank you!

Step 1: Get Magic Bullet Looks Step 2: Install Magic Bullet Looks Step 3: Open Magic Bullet Looks Step 4: Effects > Tilt Shift Step 5: Profit.
DOD Media (10 months ago)
Magic Bullet Looks creates horrible bokeh an gives you very little control. I'll stick with After Effects, thanks :-)
Fernando Varella (1 year ago)
what about the speed ( time lapse)?
Fernando Varella (1 year ago)
thanks.
DOD Media (1 year ago)
If you're doing a timelapse with video then you definitely don't want 60p. That would be useful for slowmotion which is the opposite of a timelapse :-) Also shooting in 24p will let you go with a higher resolution which is nice for timelapse because you can zoom or pan the shot slightly if you're making the final video 1080p.
Fernando Varella (1 year ago)
I will do with my dji drone. Should I use 24 or 60fps?
DOD Media (1 year ago)
For the speed you just increase the speed to the desired amount? Bearing in mind you're better off shooting an actual timelapse with stills rather than just speeding up video. You'll get a much better file to work with and it'll look much better if you're able to add some slower shutter speed so there's motion blur in moving things.
Edward Bally (1 year ago)
Haha funny to see you here dude! Hope all is good with you, thanks for your tips!
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Edward Bally oh cool! let me see!
Edward Bally (1 year ago)
Yes thanks to you I now have a great tilt shift time lapse of a street in NYC ;)
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Ha! You're welcome, j'espere que tout se passe bien pour toi!
Paul Thomsen (1 year ago)
Looks good thanks for tut - just wondering about some stop motion affect to give the toy village that hand animated look? :)
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Hey to achieve that I think your best bet would be to drop the frame rate of the comp to something like 12fps and then randomise the scale of the clip a little using the Wiggle tool, so it looks like the camera isn't just sliding smoothly along.
David Rafferty (1 year ago)
thanks for this and love the background music... I was feeling intense by the end
Eli Dolloff (1 year ago)
Thanks for the tut man!
DOD Media (1 year ago)
No problem, thanks for watching!

bepowerification (1 year ago)
do you have an idea why there is no lumetri color effect in my after effects CC 2015?
Jari Sipilainen (26 days ago)
i have cs5.5 and cant find it also. its just bundled effect.curves etc
bepowerification (1 year ago)
I would like to use this opportunity and thank you for your tutorials. They are clear, precise, understandable, yet not to basic (I watched a premiere tutorial where the guy explained how to use the select file windows dialog). Your illustrator-aftereffects-premiere workflow / dyn linking tutorial helped me a LOT. Please keep doing this :)
DOD Media (1 year ago)
No problem! Glad you were able to get it up and running!
bepowerification (1 year ago)
Hey. I think my install was corrupt, I found other effects missing as well. I kind of interrupted and resumed the install the first time, maybe its because of that. A clean reinstall fixed the problem. Just in case someone runs into it. Thank you for your replies :)
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Even trial version should include it. Hope the reinstall worked!
Mariska Ferket (1 year ago)
Was gonna say nice tutorial but damnn you've got a very nice face too.

Glad it helped!
Karki Entertainment (1 year ago)
can u drop out some color grading toturial just like this 1...
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Sure thing, I've been meaning to edit a slightly longer piece with all this drone footage I got of the Autumn colours, so perhaps I'll have a look at doing it with that :-) Thanks for the request!
Mo Graphics (1 year ago)
Thanks for the tut well executed :)
DayDay Comedy (1 year ago)
Ive beeeeeeeen wondering how to do this effect!!! Thank you so much
DOD Media (1 year ago)
No problem, thanks for watching!
Ilya Alexeev (1 year ago)
thank you so much! really interesting
Ilya Alexeev (1 year ago)
I'll try this out. Thank you. Keep going! :)
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Sure, but you'd need to do some Mesh Warping on the Adjustment layer, and then maybe move the Blur Map down slightly so you get more fall-off in focus on the top part of the image to simulate a lower viewing angle than what I used. Does that help?
Ilya Alexeev (1 year ago)
+DOD Media as I know, tilt-shift lenses also affect perspective, so are we able to simulate this distortion effect in post or not?
DOD Media (1 year ago)
Glad you enjoyed it, I hope it helps your shots look even more awesome!
