To me: *Micro transactions $3 or less *DLC $5 or less price than game typically no more than $25. *Addons/expansions $40 and up. *Anything over $60 and up is considered a whole new game or special edition.

lol at 35:26. Get roasted justin
Taylor Hemphill (8 months ago)
Some season passes are 20 dollars. So I think anything ten dollars and under is a micro transaction. It is one sixth of a full game. I also agree with the guys anything under 5 is a good standard.

Yo Daemon is the realest dude at IGN, all these years and he hasn’t switched up. Respect the legend
Yannick Naert (8 months ago)
I only spend money on a game after release if the content/cost ratio is the same, for a 60$ game to spend 15$ on a pack, dlc or add on, i look at reviews and unless it gives me 25% more of that game, im not interested. Mostly i get to keep my money😀

Xbox already has monthly quests and monthly game pass quests where when you complete the objectives you get free stuff I’ve gotten 3 $5 gift cards and free Xbox live from completing them surprisingly no one from ign talk about this

I think you are thinking of micro transactions wrong. It is not about what you spend it is about what you get. If you spent $10 on an outfit for a character then it is a micro transaction because the content is micro compared to the game that it is a part of. The Micro part refers to the content and the transaction refers to the cost. You are paying for small pieces of content.
Vooyasheck (8 months ago)
It seems the team had a problem with defining microtransactions, so I've come up with the idea that it cannot be about the price only, it also has to be about the amount of content you get for your money. So, if it's a full game for $2.50 it obviously isn't a microtransaction as the product you get for this price is a whole package - worlds, characters, full story, etc. I think that the limit of $4.99 is perfect, but it also has to be about what amount of content you get for it - is the game giving you extra world or an extra mission for it or is it more of an item that doesn't make much difference to your gameplay? And the biggest problem nowadays is not about the existence of microtransactions, the problem is that what used to be an unlockable item that you could obtain by playing the game (completing some missions, advancing your character to a certain level, playing on hard difficulty) is now available only if you keep on spending money. And for the same money you get less and less - there are very few items in games that have microtransactions that will guarantee anything, they're made in a way that will only increase your chance of getting something, especially in RPGs or online games. And if you're wondering which companies are using microtransactions to earn the most money with as little effort as possible, imagine which one of them would last if they weren't allowed to use them within first 12 months after releasing a game. Maybe that would be a good idea?

Damon, man, Link is definitely a human. Just because he has pointy ears doesn't mean shit. If it acts walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it's a duck.

Duke Nukem 3D had some significant firsts for me, to be able to look up & down, the main character spoke (hell, there was a character), you could jump & duck, plus level design wise there was levels with one room above another, and a bunch of environmental interaction with the cameras etc - not to mention the swimming with scuba gear. I don't think anyone has ever made a comment about 2 Jonathons being on Scoop, charmed I'm sure.
kakarot134 (8 months ago)
Microtransactions are for content you can purchase multiple times, DLC is content you only buy once. The price doesn't matter. I'm still playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Michael Brenner (8 months ago)
but what about microtransactions for in game currency? There are games where you pay 50 or 100 dollars for X amount of currency. While yes those are "macro" id still consider those micro.
Wesley Tomaz (8 months ago)
Great show, as usual. Like Jonathan, I also think microtransactions are defined by their content, not their price. I would call a 100 dollar new character for Injustice a microtransaction, but a 2 dollar new game mode for Rocket League a DLC. Also, about Zelda, the Deku Tree says Link is a Hylian as opposed to him being a Kokiri. I think that implies that Hylian is a race, not a nationality. So, I don't think Link is human, he is a Hylian which is something else (pointy ears).
Sean Stewart (8 months ago)
It's not the price, it refers to the ease and size of the item purchased. Because most MTXs are over $10.
AwesomeByrd (8 months ago)
I like the idea of achievements unlocking stuff for an avatar. Hopefully it unlocks stuff related to the game the achievements came from. Maybe having some games where you can use your avatar in, that would make it better.
AwesomeByrd (8 months ago)
To me, micro transaction refers to cosmetic additions, or pay to win stuff, or additional stuff for the game on launch day. Basically, micro transaction mean ripoff BS that I won't buy. Things that add to the story of the game, or additional characters in a fighting game that already had plenty of fighters seems more like DLC.
Devon Archer (8 months ago)
Micro transactions were supposed to be small $ amount purchases that unlocked small in game items like skins or bank space etc. The problem is that developers have gotten greedy and realized that chumps will buy things for insane amounts. The name literally means small transactions.
Superbed3 (8 months ago)
AwesomeByrd I honestly thought this was common knowledge. Well said.

brightgamer (8 months ago)
For me microtransactions is anything brought WITHIN a game. Whether it's a free-to-play game or $60 game. I only buy microtransactions for multiplayer games. If I spend extra money I want other people to be able to see it. If I ever buy microtransactions in a single-player game then I want it to affect the gameplay, player stats or even break the game cause no one else is effected by it but myself.
abum22 (8 months ago)
Didn't Microsoft also have early exclusivity with games like Bioshock and Mass Effect? That probably would have helped the 360 quite a bit.
Emissary Sisko (8 months ago)
Microtrasactions really refer to the content of what your buying (cosmetic, such as decorative character attire, to functional such as weapons and items, to loot boxes and in-game currency) and not as much the amount it costs.
Rob F (8 months ago)
I think Xbox’s lack of exclusives wasn’t the original problem (although an issue now) but more of a position at launch. The pricing and forcing the purchase of Kinect was not ideal and Daemon is correct that Xbox titles are available on PC offering an alternative. In Asia Xbox One isn’t even really widely available for sale. Interestingly Xbox 360 was hugely popular in China and preferred over PlayStation but this was due to piracy as 360 used a CD drive. I think the US is really the primary market for the Xbox with Asia and Europe preferring Sony. China as with films is an increasingly important market and it appears will heavily favour the PlayStation console but Microsoft will still have representation due to the primary gaming market being PCs.

I remember being mind blown when I first played Street Fighter II and found out you couldn't just push "Punch" or "Kick" like your standard beat 'em up. You actually had to use joystick movement and button combinations to do any moves beyond basic strikes. I'd never played a one on one fighter like that before. The most recent gameplay innovation I can clearly remember is using dual analog sticks for a first person shooter. The first time I remember experiencing that was Timesplitters on PS2. Got that at launch and I remember getting home and being like "Wtf is THIS?! I hate this control scheme!" Of course, I grew to be totally comfortable with it and can't imagine playing a console shooter without that layout. On top of that, Call of Duty 4 is the first time I remember playing the modern "LT/L2 aims down sights, RT/R2 fires, B/Circle to crouch, X/Square reloads, etc..." being kind of standarized (for the most part) on a shooter. It seems most FPS games have a variation of that scheme.

murph2010 (8 months ago)
I always consider micro-transactions not based on the price but on the content you're getting. If you pay 100 dollars for a costume its a micro-transaction, if you pay 1 dollar for an entire game on steam its a normal purchase. A costume is very little content, a game is well a game.
Abraham M. (8 months ago)
Superbed3 Yeah, I'm okay with that. I'll still buy indies and the rare game that don't have them. But I know I won't have many new options, and I'm okay with that. There's tons of older games I haven't played that I can still play in the future.
Superbed3 (8 months ago)
Abraham M. damn well be prepared to not buy any games in the future because eventually every game will have them. I personally only buy cosmetic micro transactions and DLC’s. Anything else feels like i’m wasting my money on a game that is pay2win.
Abraham M. (8 months ago)
Icarus Either way I don't support microtransactions. I actually don't buy games that have them.
Superbed3 (8 months ago)
Icarus but if you think like that it would contradict games that are 1$ or 2$ being called micro transactions. Because they’re so cheap you would call them a micro transaction? If it’s cosmetic content or something that saves you time on leveling up your character etc. and they’re selling within a game you already purchased or got for free then it’s a micro transaction. If it adds more gameplay to a game you already purchased or got it for free then it’s DLC.
Icarus (8 months ago)
Don't you think or feel, that the "micro" part actually refers to the cost as in the amount of money you're spending? I mean, that was even initially the idea. Having items withing your game purchasable for 1$ or 2$, which is an amount that people feel doesn't matter at all. So people would basically "mindlessly" buy something that they want to have in that exact moment, like a cool costume or some premium ingame currency to progress further. Most people don't think about buying a choclate bar or a pack of gum, when they want to. But they think about which game to purchase for 60$. They want to make an informed decision. Buying 100$ worth of ingame currency in a single pack is like buying two recent AAA games, but it's still labeled as a "micro transaction". That's PR talk for me.

Ruthless Savage Hatred (8 months ago)
In my opinion microtransactions are when you spend real world money to get in game money. Also loot boxes and anything cosmetic. Extra characters, levels, or storylines are dlc.
Bricks Accomplice (8 months ago)
there's nothing wrong with optional* key word optional micro transactions. the problem I have is when a game has a micro transaction that cannot be acquired through grinding or gives your character an advantage in any way I call these forced micro transactions. there are some games that are guilty of this, the very worst game I can think of at the moment is DC universe online.

The new Xbox career idea sounds interesting. As an achievement hunter myself I'm fine with how things are but I'm always open to new ideas. I always thought Xbox should do something similar to YouTube and give there customers an actual achievement for certain milestones. Hitting 100k or whatever number(s) as a milestone and you send that person a plaque or something to actually show off like YouTube does when someone hits subscriber milestones

when i realized botw was a CLIMBING game and you could climb ANYTHING, my brain exploded
rakan alshubat (8 months ago)
I think you guys went on a tangent with the whole careers thing. what I understood is that those "quests" are for games-as-service types. so quests for destiny 2 and Forza and Halo. The type of games that some people play forever, not Dishonored. so they give them something to work towards continuously.  Also, on the Xbox Japan topic. They sold 49 Xbox One S's in its first week in Japan. Not 49K, just 49 😂 so if you think 10k is bad Sam, you have no idea

I think one major reason the 360 jumped ahead of the PlayStation in the same way PS4 jumped ahead of Xbox one was that there was poor messaging from their competitor that made people jumped to the other console. PS3 had that awful E3 with a 500 and 600 price PS3. This gen is was the Xbox one being more expensive and bad messaging about used and shared games. I think each company really helped the other by hurting themselves to start the last two console generations.

Hey Daemon, You can find microtransactions less than $.99. FFXV has some DLC as $0.49. Most of the items were preorder exclusives that eventually released on the shop (PS4). I don't know of any examples, but I figured I'd throw that out there.
Luke Williams (8 months ago)
I always thought I never completed Eternal Darkness. Did it want me to think that? What happened?
Taylor Jones (8 months ago)
Microtransactions are things you buy over and over again, like currency in GTA5 or lootboxes. DLC is something that enhances games that you can only buy once. Like cars in Rocket League, Horse Armor, etc. The price of microtransactions dont dictate whether its a microtransaction or not.
Superbed3 (8 months ago)
Icarus yep if a micro transaction is lets say a cosmetic sword in Elder Scrolls Online for 10,000$ I see it as a micro transaction because the amount of content is small. The price is definitely ridiculous but I still call that a micro transaction because it’s content is small, not the price. I call anything DLC that adds gameplay to the game, no matter the price.
Taylor Jones (8 months ago)
Icarus I don't understand what youre talking about man
Icarus (8 months ago)
So a company/game could sell you micro-content (most of the time it's actually "anti-content") for a huge prize and you'd still call that a "micro transaction", because the amount of content you just bought is so small!? Don't you feel, that you really fall for PR talk?

Perfect Dark was going to have the thing where you could use a Gameboy Camera to take a picture of your face and scan it into the game for your character. It featured fairly heavily in previews but I also remember there being press in the UK about how you might put your teacher's face and the hysteria that created until it was canned. It was rated 18 here even without that, same as a film you weren't allowed to see in the cinema. Somehow it didn't affect sales or the murder rate.
Charlie Milroy (8 months ago)
Luke Williams I was really disappointed as I looked up to them, but it taught me an important lesson of not looking up to people in the games industry. I actually really miss the format of magazines. Getting all the news once a month with all the screenshots, rather than being drip fed like micro information. I got two of those racks. I even made a pouch for holding games myself
Luke Williams (8 months ago)

Charlie Milroy (8 months ago)
Game Scoop! When I was about 11 I wrote a letter to N64 magazine in the UK with my idea of using the gameboy camera in perfect dark. I won letter of the month, and in the next issue there was a preview of the feature. I still don't know if I just predicted something they were working on, or if they implemented my idea. Either way, I thought I'd win an N64 steering wheel, but all I got was a crappy gameboy color battery pack and no letter

career sounds like a way to add microtransactions to xbox
Poppedcollar (8 months ago)
I don't think using dollar value is a good way to define micro transactions. Whether you pay $1 for a basic skin or $15 for some sort of legendary skin (using rough LoL equivalents), it's still a micro transaction. Same goes with buying a small amount vs large amount of in game currency. I've also bought games like Bastion and Dust on Steam sales for $3 and definitely wouldn't consider those micro transactions. I think it's really about what the content is.
guamae (5 months ago)
I agree. If the download adds significant New Content (new dungeons/mission threads/maps) then it's DLC. If it Augments current content (new skins, In-game Currency, new moves) It's a Micro-transaction. And yes, "Free-to-Play" games can have $99 microtransactions.
Poppedcollar (8 months ago)
Yes, I'd absolutely call it a micro transaction and considering the term micro transaction generally has a really negative connotation, I'd say that's literally the exact opposite of falling for PR talk. I'd also say calling micro content for a macro price a micro transaction is basically the ultimate derogatory way to refer to the content. If it was actually worth the price tag, I'd call it DLC which still can sometimes have a negative connotation, but is generally much less negative.
Icarus (8 months ago)
So a company/game could sell you micro-content (most of the time it's actually "anti-content") for a huge prize and you'd still call that a "micro transaction", because the amount of content you just bought is so small!? Don't you feel, that you really fall for PR talk?

Chuck Nv Yea it's getting rediculous with the Filip hate. Somebody said something pretty shitty about him on a NVC video so I then proceeded to tell them they were acting like a fucking moron. Zack Ryan who is on the show went on to berate me and tell me what an awful person I am so I don't bother saying anything anymore since I can apparently hurt someone's little by calling them out for acting like a douchebag. Where I come from everyone is very straightforward and blunt. If someone acts like an asshole they get called out immediately and put in their place. Oh well I guess. Was only sticking up for Filip who seems like a great person.

You have posted hate comments repeatedly over multiple videos across multiple channels. You should probably go figure out why you feel the need to do this. You have some kind of obsession going on.

NJLGamer (8 months ago)
To me a micro transaction is any transaction with either a loot box system or direct currency conversion. DLC on the other hand is content that I know what I am getting and there is a finite and certain amount of purchases I can make to have all the content (of that type, some games have both dlc and microtransactions) for the game. I think there is a difference between paying 4 to 6 dollars for known content like a fighter in a fighting game or a specific car in a game like rocket league vs dropping the same amount of money for content in a loot box or a digital currency.
Taylor Jones (8 months ago)
Bricks Accomplice (8 months ago)
I support DLC if I like the game, how ever I find micro transactions frustration especially if the interfere with progression or earning items in a game.
Mr. 2006 (8 months ago)
It depends what the content is. If it is an item or character it is a micro transaction. If it's a mission or new location or level or mission it's an add on.
