FILM DESCRIPTION: Expanding on their Saturday Night Live characters, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood Blues, two white boys with black soul. Sporting cool shades and look-alike suits, Jake and Elwood are dispatched on a "mission from God" by their former teacher, Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman). Said mission is to raise $5000 to save an orphanage. In the course of their zany adventures, the Blues Brothers run afoul of neo-Nazi Henry Gibson, perform the theme from Rawhide before the most unruly bar crowd in written history, and lay waste to hundreds of cars on the streets and freeways of Chicago. In case you aren't swept up in the infectuous nuttiness of the brothers Blue, you might have fun spotting film's legion of guest stars, including James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Twiggy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Frank Oz, and Steven Spielberg. I've heard this song so often in the car and at home, it shocks how only now I find out it's actual name. Also, love this film ;).

Greatest musical in cinematic history.

I just found out something awesome about this scene. They did not use professional dancers for this, but actual residents of Chicago. When you watch this scene repeatedly (and you should), you can see various ages and body types twisting away, and they're not completely in sync at all. That and the fact that they used some kids to show how universally great this music is, just makes this movie even more awesome.

Now this would be an awesome flash mob

The location shots for this scene were filmed at 47th Street and Prairie Ave. The building that housed Ray's Music Exchange is still standing, and currently is a pawn shop. The mural is still on the wall as well, albeit faded after nearly four decades.

I'd like to know the importance of the tape removal near the beginning of the song. Is that because it was stolen and the tape was hiding a serial number or what?
Phil Adler (1 month ago)
Okay, that makes more sense now, thanks, wasn't very apparent to me at the time.
John R Ziemba (1 month ago)
It wasn't tape. Murph complained that the piano was old and had no life to it. Elwood was taking off some tattered leather off of it as if to confirm Murph's claim. However, I think Ray proved 'em wrong...there was nothing wrong with that piana.

I know I'm gonna get crap for this... but is it my imagination as I watch the chorus of dancers in the street, that I see a similarity of choreography to Michael Jackson's Thriller Zombie dance and Farris Bueller's Day off Twist and Shout street dance?

Never make the mistake of telling Ray Charles there's no action on any piano.

Ah, the Fender Rhodes......
Pelin Ustamehmetoglu (2 months ago)
The dance of crowd outside must have been inspiration to Michael Jackson in his Thriller video. Very similar figures of zombie dancers.
