Text to Sand Transition - After Effects Tutorial (No Plugins)

2040 ratings | 225810 views
This tutorial shows how to turn text to sand or dust in After Effects, and then have it blow away in the wind - all without the use of any 3rd party plugins. This sand transition effect is also one of 200 custom text styles in an After Effects template called "Creation Title Effects". Learn more at http://creationeffects.com/creation-title-effects.html. This effect can also be tweaked to make a sparks transition, fairy dust, or sand assembling to form text, all using the CC Particle Systems II effect, which comes with After Effects.

Just that I'm having a problem in downloading, I can download it but can't view it in my video list including the file manager please anyone to enlighten me please
Creation Effects (3 days ago)
It sounds like a Windows issue, which, being a Mac guy, I'm not too familiar with. As for the Title Effects template, that needs to be purchased before it can be downloaded. But you don't need it to do this tutorial.
Ebright Bolaji (3 days ago)
Even the title effect template
Ebright Bolaji (3 days ago)
I'm trying to download those tutorials but I can't found it in my playlist neither file manager
Creation Effects (3 days ago)
Hi Ebright. What are you downloading? The Title Effects template? The YouTube video? Adobe After Effects?
ScottHelp (6 days ago)
This was a very helpful tutorial thank you!
Kamal Prasad (6 days ago)
Thanks! I'm starting a new YouTube channel and when it takes off, I'll definitely purchase the full effects set to save time on future videos. Right now, I gotta put in all the hard work myself since I have practically no budget and thanks to this video, I can make my initial videos looks professional!
Creation Effects (6 days ago)
The "hard work" will grow your skills. Best of luck!

Its sucha nice tutorial but when i got to doing it, it didnt work..the particles werent moving the way yours are..please help :(
Creation Effects (7 days ago)
Most people discover that it works when they try a second time. It's easy to miss one step, which can make the whole thing not work.
ukrainethe future (14 days ago)
very excellent but please what is the font name in (0:10)
Nathan German (15 days ago)
This is the first tutorial I have seen that actually explains what all those different settings in Particle Systems mean. Most people just say the numbers they use without really explaining what they really mean, so thank you for that explanation!
Ko Minji (18 days ago)
Directional Normalized doesn't work. It is on the 4:07 on your tutorial. Do you have any idea of the solution? Mine is like a fountain.
Ko Minji (16 days ago)
I reopen After Effects and it works. Thanks a lot. It is really really great tutorial.
Creation Effects (18 days ago)
Hi Ko. Since I haven't heard of any problem with Direction Normalized before, my only guess is that you missed one of the previous steps.

Thanks, and yeah, it makes things difficult. I'm not completely blind to colors - just certain colors are hard to distinguish.

I for some reason don't see particles when I add the effect to my layer. Could there be something hidden?
Creation Effects (1 month ago)
The particles take time start emitting, so be sure to go forward in time a couple seconds.

Yes, it's a very similar process, but you'll reverse the reveal of the "Linear Wipe" effect.

Not sure if it changed in an AE update or something, but I can't find the option for Source Alpha Inheritance anywhere in CC Particle World. Any suggestions?
Creation Effects (2 months ago)
They are very similar. Just a few small, essential differences that make this effect possible with Particle Systems II.
John Johnson (2 months ago)
Creation Effects Wow i absolutely cannot believe i missed that. Totally didnt realize you were using particle systems II... Hahah thanks for the quick reply, awesome tutorial.
Creation Effects (2 months ago)
Yeah, Particle World won't work. You need to use CC Particle Systems II.

Is there a way to apply this same effect to a layer mask instead of text?
Creation Effects (3 months ago)
I believe it'll work. If not, you can pre-compose the layer and then it'll work.
NetPlanet Greece (3 months ago)
Amazing. Thanks!
John Piazza (4 months ago)
Hey, great tutorial, I've tried this but ran into a problem. I first made my text title in PS then imported the file into AE, however when adding the cc composite effect to solve the problem of the particles being contained in the just the PS layer it did not work. When I tried again, this time creating the title directly in AE like you did, it worked okay. Is there a different setting I should be using when importing files from PS to make this effect work correctly? I apologize if this is a question previously answered i just didn't want to read through 150 comments to get the answer. Thank you.
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
Hi John. Try precomposing the photoshop text. So put your image in a new comp that is the same size as your main comp. Drag the new comp into your main comp, and then start adding your effects to it. Good luck!
Raidencody (4 months ago)
Awesome video dude ... you're a hero. I have just one thing to critizise. I'm a starter in AE and I don't know all the shortcuts yet. So sometimes I didn't know which key you pressed for example when you added a keyframe. Maybe next time you can add a screen where we can see, which keys you're pressing.
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
Glad you liked it, and thanks for the feedback, Cody. I'll try to remember to name the shortcuts I use next time.

darn, got lost on the duplicate layer. you just clicked and it showed the second layer. mine doesn't for some reason.

Hi. The universal shortcut to duplicate is Command- or Control-D.

Is there a way of doing this with a photoshop layer? As in I've created a special font in photoshop and want to make it disappear in this way
Uncle Kocar (2 months ago)
I have same problem right now, you are not the only one... Thanks for ur idea of solving :D sadly I dont know how to make a wider border :D
Christian Haywood (4 months ago)
I just gave the PSD file a wider border, whatever works eh? Great tutorial, thanks!
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
That's interesting. It worked on a PNG when I tried it. Maybe try pre-composing your PNG, then add your effects to the pre-composed layer.
Christian Haywood (4 months ago)
I've tried this with a PNG and a PSD file and the CC Composite doesn't change the boundaries of the particles, any ideas?
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
Yes, it works on any layer with a transparent background. Just export a PNG then import it in AE, or import the Photoshop file.

How to do that linear transition reverse?
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
If I remember right, all you need to do is reverse the angle of the Linear Wipe effect.
sabo fx (4 months ago)
Thanx! This has been *one of the best tutorials* I've come across in a long time. And I've seen quite a lot ;-) The right speed, at a correct technical level. Keep it up!
sabo fx (4 months ago)
unfortunately your suggestion doesn't fly because the whole rectangular solid layer would be blocked instead of the 3d object that is displayed by the plugin. But i really appreciate the time you spent on trying to help me. I should really contact videocopilot support since element 3d is software that i actually legally purchased. That should earn me at least some level of support, i hope... Thanx again!
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
My next thought, was if you could duplicate the 3D object and precompose it, so that it would exist in your comp both as a real 3D object, and then also a flat 2D layer, which you would hide behind the 3D object. Would you be able to use it like in the foreground occlusion video then? If that's not the solution, then I'm not sure I have anything else to offer unless I looked at the project, which I unfortunately don't have the time to do. I hope you can figure out. You could certainly try to ask Andrew... I don't know if he responds to messages or not.
sabo fx (4 months ago)
Thank you for taking the time to look for a solution! I'm familiar with the video you suggested. It comes damn close to what I need. Except that the thing with the (three) foreground layers only works with 3d (rectangular) solids. It doesn't work with 3D effects effect plugins applied to 2D solids (like element 3D). The suggestion at the very end of the video, to render a matt to obscure the lens flare works perfect to obscure the flare. But that does not allow for the light/lens flare to remain visible when it moves between the front of the object and the camera. I've spend nights looking for a solution reading fora and watching countless tutorials. But all of them are only about obscuring the lens flare behind an object. Apparently no one else has come across a scene where a light should rotate around an object, where the z position of the light in relation to another object should determine whether to either display or obscure the lens flare. I apologize for bothering you with my frustrations! But when I saw your video, I thought you might have come across a something similar. Maybe I should try to reach out to Andrew Kramer himself. But he seems a bit MIA since last year :-(
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
Have you seen this video yet?  https://www.videocopilot.net/products/opticalflares/features/layer_occlusion/
sabo fx (4 months ago)
From your suggestion I can conclude that you understand the problem. But I simplified the scene in the example. Because the heart itself would also be rotating. When keyframing the brightness of the lens flare that would make the scene very inflexible. Any camera movement would require to redo the keyframes. What I am looking for is the ability to use a Z-depth map like in this example using trapcode particular: https://ibb.co/hLj1wb
mr000ok (4 months ago)
Thanks a lot for the tutorial and plugins, Question : How can i reverse the motion and let the particles trans to text ?
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
The key is in the Linear Wipe effect. You need to reverse the wipe so it reveals rather than make disappear.
Rose Cameron (4 months ago)
Can this be use on the CS5?
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
The 5 downloads is in total (regardless of computer used). Please let me know if you continue to have problems with your download.
Rose Cameron (4 months ago)
so i already had to try to download it twice because it did not finish download , i see we only have only 5 times to download is that for the same computer?
Creation Effects (4 months ago)
That one's free, so definitely check it out. It's my oldest template, so it's a little clunky, but still powerful, and gets great results.
Rose Cameron (4 months ago)
sure will, and thank you! Im also checking out the Lens Flare also

really great tutorial. thnx for that. on my side it worked well with text. I followed your recommendation and try it with my logo (png inkl. Alpha Channel) too. But it did not work. CC Composit running in the old problem with the cut off. Do you know the problem with png-file and CC Composit and is there a way around? when I use it at a ai-footage, the footage dissappears after cc composite. what did i do wrong? And great tutorial! Thanks!
Creation Effects (6 months ago)
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying you imported an Adobe Illustrator file? You might have better luck if you export your text/image from Illustrator as a PNG file, then bring that into AE.

DallasLights (6 months ago)
Jackyo - try dragging the time indicator (the cursor that goes back and forth on your timeline) to about 1 or 2 seconds in and see if it appears.
Creation Effects (6 months ago)
That's strange. Make sure the layer is on and its opacity is turned up to 100%. It might just be that you need to restart After Effects. Or use a different version of AE if you have one.
Mian Lon (6 months ago)
Hi, thank you for the tutorial it was great, but instead of text i tried it on video (image sequence) and the "cc composite" doesnt seem to be working, does it only work on texts?
Creation Effects (6 months ago)
Hmm, yes that's possible. You might need to adjust the dimensions of your image in Photoshop, to match your comp in AE. Make sure the image is a PNG with a transparent background.

Creation Effects (7 months ago)
It's actually just stock music I bought. I sped up my intro because I felt like it was too long, which made the music sound high-pitched. I agree, I like it better this way.

Can you do the opposite way too? From sand to logo/text rather than having it blow away?

Yes, you can just just animate the Linear Wipe effect to hide the text instead of reveal it

Sorry is the emitter the producer
Nikunj Majithia (7 months ago)
Creation Effects (7 months ago)
Yes, I forget which word "Particle Systems II" uses, but they're the same.
Nikunj Majithia (7 months ago)
sorry a bit confused on inherit velocity is velocity the speed it burst of and inherit velocity is how far the speed the particles travel, i know it inherits the speed of producer but shouldn't velocity be kind of linked to inherit velocity as they are working differently can you elaborate on inherit velocity please sorry if this annoys you tough
Nikunj Majithia (7 months ago)
Creation Effects (7 months ago)
I  don't believe they are linked. I think velocity is how fast the particles explode from the emitter, and inherit velocity adds speed and direction based on the movement of the emitter.
Nikunj Majithia (7 months ago)

Creation Effects (8 months ago)
If you want to put it on YT or post it somewhere, I'll take a look. It might be a problem that I recognize, but I can't promise anything.
The_Navigator (8 months ago)
Creation Effects I did bro like 4 5 times. Yes u have done a great job and i exactly copied for evry setting.how can i show u the result is there any way?
Creation Effects (8 months ago)
Sorry, I'm not sure what to say except to maybe start over and try again. I create the whole effect from scratch in the video, and it shows me edit every setting. I don't remember anyone else getting the results you described, so I'm sure there's some setting you might have accidentally entered wrong. Maybe take a look at the Velocity first, since that affects the speed.
Malachaai (8 months ago)
There are some good tutorials out there, but what makes yours great is that you explain what you're doing, and why, and what the different settings do, instead of just giving us settings and values to punch in. Thank you, I really appreciate that! Keep doing what you do, I feel like I've learnt more in the past 20 minutes than I have since I started using After Effect. :)
Creation Effects (8 months ago)
That means a lot - I appreciate that!
Rendy Gaming (8 months ago)
can i make this where its sand to text instead of text to sand?
Creation Effects (8 months ago)
Yes, the same principles apply. Just animate the wipe effect (or use a mask) on the text layer to reveal the text instead of making it disappear.
Etnaa flonne (9 months ago)
question: im looking for like blood or paint dripping into text or text melting can u do something similar to that ? im doing this for a pvp (player vs player) video basically fighting, and killing other ppl in video games TY dood =3
Creation Effects (9 months ago)
Bleeding text is one of the effects included in the "Creation Title Effects" template, which I talk about in the beginning of this video and is for sale at the link in the description. But I don't think I'll have time to make a tutorial.
