FILM DESCRIPTION: Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944. The symbolism of Upham shooting the German soldier at the end was pretty great to see, it meant that Upham finally manned up and got the courage to do what is necessary since he was portrayed as a coward the whole movie. Upham learned a life lesson to not be afraid to stand up for himself and others that he most likely carried with him for the rest of his life after the war

i love private jackson!
L7ColWinters (19 days ago)
Ok, stupid question, why does he have the incorrect handed weapon? Shouldn't they give the soldiers a left handed rifle if they shoot left handed?

One of the best scenes of one of the greatest war flims of all time.... No doubt about that. But there is one point to ponder......... How the hell did this guy fired more than 5 shots(possibly 7 to 8) from his sniper conversion of springfield 1903 rifle without reloading?????? ***note worthy..... It is a mauser against mausers as spring field 1903 was a mauser derivative(no offence 😀😀😀)... So german design killing germans

question to army veterans/soldiers: wouldnt it make more sense for jackson to remove the scope to have better peripheral vision?

When you think about it, all the privates and the captain who died in this movie were the ones who really became free. All the other soldiers had to keep on living in that hell. Even if they survived the whole war, they would've been scarred for life

Since when did soldiers execute enemies in battle? No accounts of this have ever been stated in World War 2. Stop demonising the average German Soldier.
AlextheHun24 Gaming (1 month ago)
Prodigy Waffen SS routinely executed civilians and soldiers. What you are saying is bullshit. Japs did the same thing, same with the Russians. Russians raped, tortured and executed Germans as payback. Germans had fun raping, torturing and executing Slavs.
Brett Higdon (2 months ago)
Barry Pepper did a great job of showing the realistic kick of the 1903.

this makes we want to puke. Why do humans have to fight? There is no god damn point in it rather than hunting for food. Thats the only natural and logic reason to harm

I feel more bad for the fact that the sniper had to use a right handed 1903 model since he was left handed you can see him awkwardly function the gun.
